Lee Savino & Golden Angel-Alien Tribute

Alien Tribute is the long awaited second book in the Tsenturion Masters series by Lee and Golden. As a quick reminder, the planet Tsentur was blown up by the Vgotha, and there are just a few (relatively) Tsenturion left. They work with the Jabol, who have hooked them up with human women so that they can rebuild their species. The way that it works is that the Jabol suck women in through a tiny wormhole, train them, and then give them to the Tsenturions. The first Tribute, Dawn, went to the High Commander. Now, we have Pareena and Bogdan’s story.

So, Bogdan is the second in command of the Tsenturion. He really doesn’t want to have Tribute. He thinks that it’s too early to bring in Tributes, because their enemy is still out there. He also has a history that no one else knows about. But, just because he doesn’t want one doesn’t mean that he’s going to not have one. When his High Commander says that his tribute is ready, he has no choice but to accept her, even if he really doesn’t want to. His plan is to not bond with her, but to train her and make sure that she’s taken care of.

Pareena, Dr. Pareena Singh to be precise, is dying of cancer. She’s been stuck in the hospital, and is at the point where her life is now measured in days, rather than in months and years. So, when she gets an ereader loaded up with all her favorite type books, she’s going to spend as much time as possible reading it, because it takes her out of her real life. Bt when she finishes one particular book, she gets a survey at the end with the suggestion to swipe right for abduction. So, you know, she does. And is pulled into a wormhole and into what she is pretty sure is a coma dream and she’s dying.

She gets trained by the Jabol and sent to Bogdan, who is pretty cold to her, at least sometimes. Other times he’s pretty damn warm to her. Which is confusing as all hell to both of them.

Oh, Bogdan pisses me right the hell off sometimes. I mean, I totally get where he’s coming from and why he has made the choices that he has, but I just don’t like the way that he treats Pareena some of the time. And it’s not because he’s the whole Domly type, it’s his choices that he makes. When it comes to the D stuff, he actually rocks my world. And, I guess probably Pareena’s too.

I totally understand why Pareena wants to see this as a coma dream. I would probably want to see it that way too, because it would be much less scary. Of course, much less scary doesn’t necessarily mean all that much sometimes.  I really like how well she and Bogdan mesh when it comes to certain things.

Petra J. Knox & Raven Dark-Captured

Petra and Raven write a lovely dark RH series that I really enjoy, Saving Setora. So, when I heard they were starting another dark RH series, I may or may not have jumped for joy. And since there is no photographic proof one way or the other, no one will ever know. It’s the Schrodinger’s jump. But none of this has anything to do with Captured.

Captured is dark. There are no warm and fuzzies here. If you are familiar with Setora and you think you are going to get another Sheriff or Hawk, be aware that Malek, Z’pheer, and Raul make Sheriff look like a big cuddly sweetie.

Here’s how our story goes.

Danika has spent the last 4 years living in the Xandar Home for Girls. It’s supposed to be a great place for young women and give them a chance for a good life when they leave at 18. Well, tonight is Danika’s 18th birthday and she’s about to go audition for the biggest nightclub owner in her town as a singer. She’s really good at it and she is both nervous and excited. The head of the school is going with her, as well as Shelly, who is one of the employees of the school. The employees aren’t supposed to be friendly with the students, but Shelly is Danika’s best friend, so she’s going to go. And it goes splendidly. Right up until it goes splendidly wrong and Danika wakes up naked and far from home.

She wakes up with her hands cuffed and an alien man in front of her, as well as a huge fluffy pink beast that she briefly thinks of as Falcor, the luck dragon. Right until he opens his mouth and she gets a good look at his feet.

Even worse, Danika doesn’t understand a word of anything that is being spoken, and it doesn’t get any better when the other guys start showing up. She has no clue what they are saying, but it’s obvious that they understand her, so the only things she can feel right now is mad and scared.

Malek, Z’pheer, and Raul are Xandari men. They are members of the Order, and have been awarded their nayna. Their slave. And guess who it is? I’ll give you 3 guess, and the first 2 don’t count.

The men basically break down into the muscle, the leader, and the nice one. Raul is very obviously the leader. Malek is very obviously the muscle, and Z’pheer appears to be the nice one.

OK, here’s the thing. I really, really, really didn’t like any of the guys for a good chunk of the book. I disliked Malek the most, at least most of the time, and Z’pheer the least. Raul kind of floated around, depending on what was happening at any given time. But, I loved to hate them and even as I really didn’t like them, I started to kind of love them too. It wasn’t a quick process, not in any way, but it happened, and I kind of hated to love them. Do you know how hard it must be to write characters like that? I mean, I have DNFed books where I liked the male main characters more than these guys. That being said, I was so dragged into the book, and the guys were so magnetic, and the story was just so compelling, that even though I wanted to strangle them on a regular basis, I couldn’t put the book down. I needed to know what was going to happen next. It was such a need that it practically hurt. That’s how compelling this book was.

I mostly like Danika. There are a few times where the fact that she is 18 is really obvious. She has some black and white thinking, I think, which is something that you really have to grow out of, and as an adult, you learn that nothing is ever entirely black or white, but infinite shades of grey. Way more than just 50. She also builds walls. I mean walls that make the Great Wall of China look like nothing. I don’t blame her for a minute, because she’s been abducted, taken by men whose language she doesn’t speak, and had just about everything taken away from her. I’d be fucking pissed and put up walls too. I love her spirit and fire. She’s got a very strong core that keeps her going and keeps her from totally breaking. However, it does sometimes keep her from bending when bending would be easier, I think. But without that core, she wouldn’t be who she is, and we’d been looking at a different book.

There are so many things I like about this book is that it is all in Danika’s POV. We have no clue as to what is going on in the guys’ heads, nor do we know anything about them other than what Danika is able to find out. There are times when I really want to have a multi-POV, but this is not one of them. I think that a multi-POV would’ve weakened this book a lot. I really love that we find out what is going on in the world only as Danika does, and since we are seeing her filter, we only get certain things. I think that’s part of what makes this book so freaking compelling. Honestly, it truly is one of the most compelling books I’ve read in a good while, and considering some of what I’ve read in the last 6 months, that’s really saying something.

This is a standalone, but it is the first book in a series. I can’t wait to see where the series is going to go.

Lee Savino & Golden Angel-Alien Captive

These two naughty authors got together to give us a really, really naughty book. Really, really, REALLY naughty. And OMFG hot. Alien Captive kept me captive from start to finish. It was almost enough to make me turn off my Kindle and put it away. But only almost. Or was it? Was it just a further reason to keep reading forever and ever, and to maybe not sleep because I was reading? I’ll never tell. You’ll just have to guess. But if I were you, I’d pay attention to what you’re reading, especially when it comes to Lee and Angel’s books.

Here’s how it goes. The Tsenturions are nearly extinct. The bad guys destroyed their planet when everyone should’ve been on planet. However, there was one ship that was not there, so they didn’t die. Now, for the past thousand years, they’ve been protecting the Jabols and fighting the Vgotha. When these guys die, their species is completely gone because they have no females. However, the Jabols have a plan for that. They have decided to take advantage of the e-reader and naughty book readers out there.

Dawn is a yoga instructor with very few connections to people. She lives alone, her family is dead, her house is the biggest connection she has, except for the mysterious e-reader she got in the mail. The e-reader that she has loaded up with all kinds of books by all kinds of authors, whose names are all mentioned in the book as her fave authors (and who I’ve all read, include Tracy St. John and her two cocked aliens). There’s also a series called the Tsenturion Trilogy. It’s a series about women who have been taken to be Tribute for the Tsenturions to help rebuild their race. Just as she finishes the series, again, there’s a huge storm and all of a sudden she sees a big flash of light.

Then she wakes up strapped to a table with an alien standing over her telling her that she has been selected to be a Tribute to the Tsenturion High Commander, Gavrill. And oh, to make sure that she’s ready for him, they’ve attached a Bride Training device which vibrates and trains her for him. Keeps her just on the edge for a very, very, very loooooong time.

Meanwhile, somewhere else in the galaxy, Gavrill and his crew are outside of a nebula watching for the Vgotha. Then he gets the message that his Tribute is ready. After arguing with Bogdan, his second, he decides that he’s going to go get her. When they meet, she passes out because of the strength of her orgasm around him. That’s a fucking great orgasm. Then they get all hot and dirty, and Dawn is introduced to his cock, and the seela. Basically, what we’re looking at is an alien cock with a flared head, almost like a cobra, within a nest of little tentacles, with one that would hit pretty much right at her clit. Yes, please.

There is a lot of mind-blowing sex going on. Pretty much exactly mind-blowing for Dawn, who passes out a couple of times from all the orgasms. I mean, dayum. But, for all of that amazing sex and magical tentacle cocks going on, there’s so much more to this story. Remember, this is a first contact situation all around, and think of all the complications that arise whenever any two new groups meet. It’s never easy. And it’s not any easier here, especially when you walk into a situation where it’s a ship full of boys who are wanting revenge and have wanted nothing but revenge for a millennium. (That’s just a fun word to say, don’t you think?) I love Medik, the ship’s doctor. He’s a kindly sort. I just want him to say I’m a doctor, not an engineer, physicist…. But that’s because I’m a huge geek, and I would totally laugh my ass off at it. What? My first love was scifi. My first crushes were Princess Leia and Han Solo. Give me a break.

I think that both Gavrill and Dawn needed to sit down and think about the fact that they are dealing with a different species and one with a different set of cultural norms and standards. I got really mad at Gavrill and even madder at Bogdan. I understand, mostly where B was coming from, but he has to stop and realize that things are going to be different now and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. And really, isn’t a millennium of revenge enough?

The Vgotha are interesting. I’d love to find out a lot more about them. Symbiotic ships sound super awesome to me.

Raisa Greywood-The Tiger King

Raisa is still a fairly new writer. This is her 5th book, unless I can’t count, which, it being Friday, is always a possibility. I’m sure if I’m wrong, she’ll tell me. 🙂 Anyway, she has a series called Shifter’s Mates, which is post-apocalyptic and dystopian, involves aliens, fated mates, abductions by hostile aliens, and shifters. That sounds like a wonderful mix, doesn’t it? I think so, I really do. Now Raisa’s given us the 2nd book in the series, The Tiger King. I reviewed The Tiger Queen back when I read it because it totally blew me away. And King kept up with that breeze.

So, to recap, Renata is a tiger shifter who is living on Earth. She’s slowly starving to death because the Earth is pretty damn destroyed. A jackal friend of hers told her to go get tested to see if she can find a Ximerian mate. Then she could go off to live on Ximera and have a new life. So, she does. When she gets ready to leave, she ends up being stolen. Her last thought before being put in stasis is don’t fuck with a tiger. I’m pretty sure the last thought in the heads of a lot of people when she woke up was oh fuck, a tiger. Eventually her mate, Rakon, finds her and “rescues” her.

And now to King. Rakon and Renata, who is seriously in my top 10 BAMF heroines, have done everything that they were supposed to do in order to seal their mating. Rakon realizes that maybe he shoulda oughta’ve listened to Renata. Because of course, he should’ve. She knows what she’s talking about, but you know how men are. But they are now mated, and she is well and truly War Mate Renata. And let me tell you, I think that the title is perfect for her. Maybe she should be the commander and Rakon should be the War Mate? Just a thought.

It turns out that there is someone playing silly buggers on Ximera and Rakon and Renata are accused of kidnapping Fengar, the First Councillor. He just rolls his eyes at that, and together with a friend of Rakon’s, they all come up with a plan to deal with who is causing these problems. That leads to an empty spot on the council, and Fengar, who is very fond of Renata, wants her to be the person to fill it, to watch out for the shifters and humans who will be coming to or are already on Ximera.

As a quick note on Fengar, he is probably my favorite side character in this series. He is tricksy and wily. He’s kind of like a chess grandmaster with a twisted sense of humor. He knows what moves you are going to make before you make them, but he’s going to have fun watching you figure them out and probably point and laugh at you along the way. But not necessarily in a mean way. And for some reason, he and Renata really like each other. I think maybe she sees him as a father figure, but I’m not 100% sure.

Meanwhile, Renata isn’t all that sure she wants to be a councilor. It will mean that she has to stay in the capital, around a lot of people. Twitching tigers don’t do well around a lot of people. All she really wants to do is to go to her mate’s home, swim in the ocean, catch giant denizens of the deep, and make cubs.

I am once again impressed with Renata. I mean, she isn’t a damsel in distress, pretty much ever. She is the damsel who causes distress. I mean, even without her tiger self, she is pretty much just totally badass, but add in that tiger, and get the fuck out of the way, and don’t piss her off. Don’t fuck with anything that she considers her, and really? Probably laying down and covering yourself in steak sauce would be your best idea. I dunno, do tigers like steak sauce? Maybe just some au jus or a nice horseradish. I like Rakon. He can be an idiot sometimes, but really, who can’t? However, he pretty much recognizes who and what his mate is and is pretty much willing to let her be her without trying to hem her into anything. Of course, she would probably knock his block off if he tried to, but he doesn’t stand in between her and danger or make her live in a padded room.

I love the bear and the tiger swimming in the ocean and catching the big old fish. I mean, how much fun was that? Neither of these ladies have been able to just let go and be themselves and have fun on a sunny beach near the ocean ever in their whole lives. They’ve always been subsisting and had to hide, so getting to just be out there in the open has to feel amazing.

I was fascinated by the history we got on shifters, and I’m looking forward to seeing how that info helps with the search for more shifters, both out in space and on Earth. I’m hoping we can see more about her family’s history as well as the history of other shifters.

Sophie Kisker-Saved

It’s been a while since Sophie has been on the blog, but that’s OK, she’s Saved us with the newest book in the Nectar of the Gods series.

In case you don’t remember, Anterrin men are addicted to the nectar that is produced by human women when they are aroused and orgasm. Because of this, they have figured out a way to use portals to grab human women and bring them forward in time and space so that they can serve as nectar slaves. There are various levels of slaves, from ones who are in the dive bars all the way up to the most private and exclusive slaves who produce the most exotic nectar. There are also privately owned nectar slaves, as well as slaves who serve at the king’s pleasure. But, probably the human women are kept in common taverns where the Average Joe can come and sip straight from the source.

Abriela is one of the women who is kept in one of those common nectar houses. She has been there for nearly a year, and is trapped with several other human women, including one woman who has spent the last 5 days trapped in a cubby that has been completely shut, with no light at all and within a sound dampening field so she can’t even hear herself talk. On this particular morning, their evil master lets that poor woman out and tells her that she will have to be at work the next day, and then he lines up the women to be drugged with arousal enhancing drugs and tied up out in the main room so that the men can lick them raw for the next 8 hours. Abriela stops counting after 30 orgasms in a day. OK, orgasms are pretty damn nice, but 30 forced orgasms in 8 hours, day after day after day would get old and pretty painful too. I probably wouldn’t ever want to have an orgasm again after that. When one of the customers gets mad because she won’t keep her eyes on him while he’s using her, her master says he’ll punish her. When he does, Stella, the poor woman who had been trapped attacks him and he kills her. When Abriela sees that he killed her, she grabs the strap that her master was about to strap her pussy with and whips him across the face. Then he knocks her across the room and fades to black.

Meanwhile, across town, Kirin is an Anterrin male, and like all Anterrin males, he has a twin brother, named Damek. Kirin is a researcher trying to figure out how to deal with a terrible illness that children born to human women and Anterrin males get. It doesn’t affect all the children, but any child it does affect dies. He has a clinic full of human women that he’s studying and a director who is on his side. Damek works as an assistant to a governmental minister, basically a cabinet member to the king (who is kind of bugfuck). One day, Damek has to come pick Kirin up from work because his transport is busted. When Kirin opens the door to leave, he discovers a tiny, bloody human woman. Of course, it’s Abriela. He and Damek check her out, clean her up, hear her story, and decide that they are going to take her home with them.

While there is all kinds of naughtiness, happy sexy fun times, and spankings, this one gets more into the politics and the background of what’s going on with the Anterrins and humans and Earth at the moment. The King, who I might have mentioned is kind of bugfuck, is starting to decompensate. That’s never a good thing. I liked getting into all those politics and all that background and I found that it didn’t overwhelm the rest of the story with Abriela, Kirin, and Damek. In fact, the politics and such really added to it because there are a lot of choices that are getting made by a lot of people that affect our trio because of what His Majesty, King Bugfuck is doing.

At least Earth, in some time period, is finally putting its foot down. It’s going to be interesting to see if the Anterrins try to retaliate, of course, the decision was made hundreds of years ago, so I don’t know if retaliating against Earth is going to do anything about it now.

I wonder how bad the war is going to be, if there’s a war. King Bugfuck sure seems like he wants to start a war or three. I wonder if he has a bad combover? I wonder if he’s going to get offed, because I think he really needs to, right soon now.

I think it’s about to get really scary, well more scary, for the human women stuck here now. It’s going to be much easier for them to get “lost” in the series.

Maddie Taylor-Defying the General

I think that the first Maddie Taylor book I read was The Barbarian’s Captive, which is the first book of the Primarian Mates series. I bought each one as soon as I possibly could and I was a happy camper. I look forward to each book, and I’m pretty invested in the recurring characters. Defying the General is the 4th book in the series, and it’s the most emotionally tense one, for me at least.

So, here’s the basic background on the series. The Earth is basically imploding. There are constant natural disasters and it’s a ticking time bomb. There are many more women than there are men, so the government decided to send out a ship full of 300 women to go out and explore the universe. They are on a mission to find a planet that is similar enough to Earth that they can colonize. Eventually, the goal will be to have as many humans as possible off Earth and on to the colonized planet.

A few years into their mission, our intrepid heroes find a planet that looks like it will fit. Some of the women go down in a shuttle so that they can evaluate the planet to see if it will work. While they are there, they run into some huge barbarian looking dudes who are running around in loincloths. Some of the scientists manage to get back to the shuttle and get away from the barbarians who are chasing them. Eight of the women don’t. They are captured by the barbarians who aren’t really barbarians but men from an advanced society who are come to this planet to hunt.

The women on their home planet all have massive issues with infertility due to outside causes. That means that as a species they are going to die unless they can find a species that they can cross-breed with. Humans fit. Humans and Primarians are genetically compatible. So, the 8 women are taken to the homeworld, where they are tested for compatibility to the men who captured them, and then they are mated.

Defying is the story of Lana and Trask. Trask is the highest military authority on Primara. He’s cousin to the leader and related to a huge chunk of the council. He’s a VVIP. Lana is a geologist. She and Trask manage to make their relationship work almost from the beginning. It looks like they are going to be one of the relationships that starts out smoothly and just keeps trucking along. However, she starts getting sick whenever Trask is around, very sick with migraines and can’t keep anything down. The healers can’t figure out what’s wrong with her. With a treaty made with Earth, she now has the ability to petition to dissolve their mating, which she does, telling Trask she’d rather be back on Earth.

I will fully admit to crying my fucking eyes out on this one. I just cried and cried. I loved Lana and Trask when we first met them, and when they showed up every other time in the books, I was glad to see them. But their own book? There were some seriously sad bits. I ended up with a huge pile of tissues next to me, and since I was reading in the middle of the night, I had to be really careful to be quiet so that I didn’t disturb my husband. Honestly, I couldn’t put this one down until it ended. When it was done, I felt weirdly hollow and happy. It sounds like a really fucked-up combination, and it is, but it’s the way that I felt. I really went on a roller coaster emotionally, and had that whole stomach dropping feeling going on, but in a good way. Go and read the whole series, it’s a great one. It is very kinky as well as a great story.

Ugh, I hated that Lana and Trask were apart for so long. It was so terrible. Poor Lana just never got better from being away from Trask. When they met on the ship right after they left, I was hurt for both of them. It was so traumatic. I was mad at Trask, I mean, couldn’t he tell how much she was hurting? He was supposed to love her and it was so obvious that she was lying to him, but…

I’m not surprised that the bad guy turned out to be who the bad guy was. What a prick.

I can’t wait for the next one. I’m pretty sure who the next couple will be. I can’t wait to see if I’m right.

Sara Fields-Conquered

If Sara Fields writes it, I will read it. It’s like the whole Field of Dreams thing, but better because I don’t have to walk out into any corn fields or sit on an uncomfortable bleacher bench. I can sit in my nice comfy couch, with a nice cold beverage, and just read the books. So, totally better.

Today, she decided to write a dark scifi reverse harem book. Is it the darkest thing I’ve ever read? Nope. I have a feeling title will be coming soon. Is it darker than other things that she’s written? Yeah, I think so. Did I love it? Fuck yeah, you better believe I did.

So, on to Conquered. This is an alien invasion/abduction story on the top of it. The Vakarrans are a ruthless species. They can’t really afford to be if they want their species to survive. There are no Vakarran women, so if they want to continue, they need to find species with which they can breed. Humans just happen to be one of those species. The Vakarrans pretty much figure if the humans didn’t want Earth to be invaded, they should’ve just been better at protecting themselves. Oh well, they weren’t, and now all the men are slave labor and the women are all sex slaves and breeders. Women were supposed to all go to training camps so that they can be trained and such.

Kira was just a teenager when the Vakarrans invaded the Earth. Her two younger sisters weren’t even teenagers. On invasion day, their parents shoved the girls out the door and into the forest behind their house. The girls ran and hid in a cave. They expected their parents would be there at some point, but they never showed up. The girls had to figure out how to live in the wilds. Luckily, they had always played out in the woods and were familiar with stuff, so it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. Now, Kira and her sisters lead a rogue band of humans. Mostly they are women who are hiding from the Vakarrans, either they’ve escaped or they just never went to the camps at all. There are a few men there too, but not as many. Kira would like for her group to be a resistance, but right now she just wants to make sure that they are all safe. She may be rebellious, but she’s also a very responsible leader and has done everything she can to make sure that they stay hidden, including laying traps for the Vakarrans.

The Vakarrans have sent another patrol out to find her, and she’s used her traps to kill them, in a very nasty way. That made the leader very angry, since they were his buds. He wants Kira caught and punished. So he sends out a very good team to get her, Zaavyr, Jax, Coltan and Aedan. They are veterans, smart, wily, careful, and tricksy. They manage to come up with a way to catch Kira and bring her to their training camp.

I love Kira. She’s very strong and very smart. Sometimes, I think that she may be a little too smart for her own good. She is always thinking, and that can get a person in trouble. But, I think that our guys value her intelligence, strength, and spirit. Not everyone did, but if they didn’t, they deserve what they may get. This is a true fact. I do like the guys, even though some people may think that they were a little hard on Kira. I think that they were as hard as they had to be at times. Things that people may think were terrible could’ve been a lot worse than they were, and the boys had to do what they did in order to keep from having to do things that would’ve been worse or letting other people do those things to Kira. The important thing is that while they may hurt her while they are punishing her, they would never harm her, and that’s better than others would’ve done. And, I think they may have had to be hard on Kira, at least at first, because she was so used to being independent, and it can be really hard to go from being the one in control to being the one who has no control.

I love that the guys kept Kira’s secrets and let her keep an eye out for things. They are really trusting her, but they love her, and theoretically, you trust the person you love, right?

I do also like the way they managed to get rid of the nasty captain. It let Kira get some of her own back, and I’m all for that. He’s the one who hurt her, he deserved what he got.

Hannah Davenport-Kattlyn

I’ve had a couple of other Hannah Davenport books on here. One was in a different genre than her scifi romance books, but now we’re back in that genre and back in her Azziarin world. Today, we’re looking at Alan and Kattlyn.

We first met Alan in Theon’s book. Theon’s book is a spinoff from the Azziarin universe, and we’ll be seeing more of that particular spinoff, I expect. Alan was taken prisoner by the Tureis at the same time his sister Krista was, but not by the same group. Alan and Krista had left their secluded cabin and run into the alien invaders. Krista was found by her mate and taken to safety. Alan didn’t fare so well. Along with a human woman, Catalina, he was experimented on. The Tureis were trying to breed humans, but Cat and Alan didn’t do anything that would let them get their wishes. Cat and Alan grew very close, but more like brother and sister than lovers. When they were rescued, Alan went one way and Cat went another.

Alan eventually ended up on an Azzairin ship with Zekke and his mate. They told him that a woman named Krista had mated one of the Azzairin princes. Of course, it can’t be the same one, Alan tells himself. But of course, we can probably guess that it is. When he gets to the castle, he discovers for himself, that yes, it is his sister. Hurray! Krista is so thrilled to see him.

However, Krista isn’t the only one who is glad to see him. Kattlyn, the only princess in a family of princes, sees him and realizes that he is her one true mate. She’s just thrilled about that. Ever since her brothers have come home with their true mates, she’s wanted the same thing. She doesn’t want to live in a loveless marriage with a man who is going to have consorts and will never be faithful to her like she would have to be to him. She saw her mother suffer through that with her father, and she refuses to deal with it. Sadly, her father has arranged a mating with a truly odious man named Jussin, who tells her that he will never love her, he loves his consort and won’t give her up, and he’s only mating Kattlyn so that he can get the power that being mated to a royal will give him. But, she sees her human friends and their mates, her brothers, all being happy and in love, and she’s not going to give that up, no matter what her father says. She keeps telling him that she won’t do it, but he doesn’t listen.

You know how it goes, if you go down past this picture, you run the risk of spoilers. I love the way that this story turns the whole alien man meets human woman and finds out that she’s his fated mate and she has to go to get used to his society right on its head. Now we have an alien man, human Alan, meeting an Azzairin woman who he’s incredibly attracted to, discovers she’s his fated mate, and he has to get settled into her society.  It’s always exciting to see a trope flipped around like that, and even more exciting to see it done as well as Hannah did. I’m glad that Kattlyn gets to have what her brothers have. I think, without having read all the other books in a while, that there is some overlap with this books and the others, in regards to timeline. I’m going to go back and reread them and check. Oh darn, what a tough job I have, right? I have to read a book. Alan was a cop, and this pic made me think of cops dealing with a world after an alien invasion, so there we are.

I knew Jussin was a complete fuckhead, but I didn’t realize that he would be as bad as he was. I didn’t expect him to do what he did. I am normally suspicious of everyone, so the fact that he sneaked that past me is good on him, bad on me.

I love that Alan earned Kattlyn’s family’s respect by beating the ever living daylights out of the rebels. Of course, the world was better off without them there anyway, so yay for that.

Loki Renard-Broken by the Alien

Does it seem like I’ve had a lot of Loki Renard posts here lately? Well, there’s a very good reason for that. Loki has been ridiculously prolific lately. I’m not complaining, since that just means more books for me to read. And, I don’t know if you knew this or not, but I LOVE to read. If it came down to giving up chocolate or giving up books, I’d give up chocolate. But, since I don’t have to choose, I will eat my chocolate while reading, just like I did while reading Broken by the Alien.

Loki tends to write on the darker end of things, and this one fits in really well with the other books of hers that I’ve recently blogged. It is a scifi romance though, instead of being here on Earth.

This is the way that the story goes. The Rathkari have invaded Earth. They are very much into breeding. They want to do everything they can to make sure that their species continues. Each person is going to be the parent of millions, so it’s important to mate and breed. But that doesn’t mean that they are going to let humans keep doing that. No, their plan is to take all the human males off of Earth and do heaven only knows what with them. Then they take all the women of breeding age and go make happy little Rathkari babies. Either they do that through a mating bond or there are breeding facilities where women can go and just keep having babies. Women who are too old to breed are used as slave labor on Earth to produce food for the Rathkari fleets and people.

In the very intense first chapter, we meet Era. She has lost her father and brother, and her brother’s fiancee is now one of the women having Rathkari babies. Era literally has no one left on the face of the Earth. She’s of prime child-bearing years, but instead, she’s laboring in the rice paddies, planting, harvesting, and hauling huge bags of rice around. She’s hiding and trying to make it look like she’s older than she is. The fact that the Rathkari don’t treat their slaves well or feed them all that particularly well makes it even easier to sell her masquerade. But, when the overseer sees her period blood on her leg one day, he decides that she’s broken and is going to take her to the recycler, which will let her be used to nourish the fields.

That’s when Karlo shows up. He’s the superior officer in charge of the particular quadrant that Earth is in. He just happens to be doing an inspection of the fields that day and sees Era struggling with the overseer. She wants to live, so she’s trying to get him to let her go. Karlo recognizes that she’s probably of childbearing years, so he goes to save her. Era suddenly changes her mind and decides that nope, the overseer can just go toss her in the recycler if that means that she doesn’t have to go with Karlo. She quite literally would rather die than to have him save her life. But since he’s bigger than she is and much healthier, she doesn’t have a lot of choice. He takes her, straps her into the shuttle, and takes her back to his ship and his quarters. He’s planning on taking her as his mate, but first he has to get her healthy, and it turns out that she’s going to keep fighting him the whole time.

OK, it’s that time. Era hates the Rathkari, and I gotta say that I can’t blame her for that at all. If I were in her place, I would probably hate them as well. But, it also sounds like the occupation may have been mismanaged, so if things had gone better, would that have changed her feelings? I dunno. I often play what if… with books, but I don’t think this is one that I’m going to do that with. The fact is, she hates the Rathkari in general, and quite often, Karlo in particular. He doesn’t do a whole lot to endear himself to her either. Of course, they both have very different POVs so there are a lot of misunderstandings, but he doesn’t really try to get where she’s coming from. I liked Karlo, but there are times that I was really furious at him. I will say that there are times when I’m mad at Era too. Just as he doesn’t really try to get her POV, I don’t think that Era really tries to put herself in his shoes. There are just huge chasms between the two of them that are almost impossible to bridge at times. The book made me feel happy, sad, angry, stressed, and joyful, sometimes all at once. I totally loved it.

The rope work that Karlo does is pretty damn awesome, and I would totally love that. Not entirely sure that I’d want the first punishment he does with it, though.

I was really mad at Karlo during the whole explanation that Era couldn’t get pregnant and his reaction. Of course she’s going to be angry about the whole thing, but anger is a secondary emotion, and it’s always easier to be scared than it is to be afraid or to be vulnerable or to tell him that she has some kind of feelings for him. It’s not like I expected him to read her mind, but I did expect something better out of him.

Kallista Dane-Defending Their Mate

Kallista is an author that I’ve been reading for awhile now, but this is the first time that I’ve had the opportunity to ARC one of her books and now share it with you guys. Aren’t you excited? I must say that I am. I love sharing authors that I like with all my readers.

Anyway, I got started reading Kallista with her Alien Masters series, which is a really interesting way to have aliens. Well, I’m not entirely sure I’d call them aliens, per se, go read the books and tell me what you think. Then I moved to her Tharan Warriors series. This is a menage fated mates series.

The basic premise is that there is a military ship full of human women who are out doing their business when they are raided and captured by a pirate. The pirate then uses their ship to do other raids. All the women are locked up in the hold for nefarious purposes. However, in order to land on the Tharan homeworld, the pirates need to have one of the women to help them. Cass manages to escape and tries to get help. The problem is that the pirates have already raided the world and ended up killing some of the women.

Any male of any Tharan species is born part of a set of twins. The Tharan males are deeply entwined, to the point that they feel what the other feels and tastes what the other tastes. Because they are so close, they even share a mate. Our first twins are Rhyn and Rhom. They find Cass and think that she’s with the people who raided their planet and killed their mate. They drag her on a ship and go off to chase the bad guys. This is actually a good thing because the pirates are selling off human and Tharan women to various places, like pleasure domes an arenas.

The Tharan males also have another nifty thing. They produce this thing called gyron, which is basically a seriously potent pheromone. When their mate encounters it, the woman gets uber-horny. And the Tharan males have a pretty extreme reaction to the pheromones secreted by human women.

So, the rest of the series is about rescuing the various women who the pirates sold off. This book, Defending Their Mate, is about Aliya. She’s a human medical officer, but more than that, she’s a Healer. She’s empathic and can help heal the psychic hurts that a person may have. She can also tend them physically. She’s been working closely with Aartan, who is a Tharan medical officer. Among other things, he’s a very talented surgeon and fits people with cybernetic prosthetics. They are both wildly attracted to the other and dream of each other, but nothing has happened, yet. Aliya knows that there is something there because his gyron affects her, and she knows from all her mated friends, that only happens with mates.

Finally, after talking to another Tharan male and finding out more of Aartan’s story, she goes to confront him. She tells him that she knows they’re mates. He tells her nope. She says fine, if you can kiss me and then tell me the same thing, then I’ll believe you. Well, there was a lot of kissing in as many places as possible involved, but then he pushed her away. She stomped into her room, started getting really angry, and decided to burst into Aartan’s room and confront him again, mostly because he made her feel really bad. That’s when she meets his twin, Azar and finds out that she’s been tricked. They spend one perfect night together, and then they tell her that nope, she’s not their mate, and she has to leave the ship and go back to the homeworld with all her friends. And that’s when all the bad happens.

Ok, you know the drill, if you go past this pic and you get spoiled, don’t blame me. You know what’s going to happen. I really enjoy reading this series. You get a pair of really alpha males who aren’t afraid to spank their mate if she needs it, but they cherish her, love her, and pleasure her. Sign me right up for that. One of the nice things about the series though is that the women aren’t pushovers. The human women were all trained military officers, each with her own skills and specialties, and those skills are valued by their mates. The guys don’t try to put the women in a padded room and not let them do anything. Well, scratch that, they may want to try, but then they realize it’s not going to work. There’s compromise instead of anything else, and that’s just perfect. And that’s one very good reason as to why I’ll keep reading this series when the new ones come out.

I don’t blame Aliya for wanting to strangle Aartan and Azar, I totally would’ve. In fact, I did want to on her behalf. It was such a shitty thing for them to do, to send her away like that. I mean, they should’ve known how she would feel.

I do love how tricksy the boys were when it came time to rescue Aliya from the arena and the dragons. And Ceres, she is totally awesome. I mean, who expects this little slip of a girl to go in and calm down 3 huge, scary, carnivorous dragons just by singing at them? Totally unexpected, but the coolest thing ever.
