Blurb:

Mirabella Rousseau is on the run, sailing with her cousin from the Caribbean to France to escape an arranged marriage. Posing as Gaspard’s male servant offers a measure of protection until their ship is captured by the infamous pirate, Captain Giorgio Baretti.

When Giorgio and his first mate, Paolo Serra, learn Mirabella’s true identity, they quickly claim her for themselves, determined to make her pay for her uncle’s sins. Sworn enemies of Henri Allard, Giorgio and Paulo intend to bend his orphaned niece to their will, forcing her to share their bed whilst trying to uncover the secrets that she keeps.

Learning that Mirabella holds the key to the treasure map in Giorgio’s possession changes everything. Flung into a dangerous adventure of betrayal, passion, risk, and redemption, they must hazard all they hold dear to save themselves—including the young woman who has somehow touched their cold pirate hearts.

This swashbuckling historical ménage is written with dark humor, a murder mystery, and a dash of intrigue, replete with nods to modern pop culture. Fans of The Princess Bride will appreciate that Bound by the Pirate King began as a fictional novel in a fictional novel whose heroine had a taste for lurid literature and pirate play.

Written with heat, humor, and possible triggers for Ages 18+.

Excerpt 1 (PG17):

“Search the room!” the pirate boomed.  Anything of value, bring on deck.”

Whoever was there laughed at the mess that Gaspard had made.  “He must have had his pistols buried,” an Irish-accented voice rang out. Having grown up with an uncle in politics, Mirabella had developed an ear for languages. She spoke five fluently and could manage a casual conversation in two more.

“Nice ones, they were. I can see why he’d hide them. A pair like that would fetch a pretty penny in Nassau.”

“Paolo’s got his coin and guns,” a second man complained, Portuguese from the sounds of it. “I don’t know what he expects us to find.”

They found Marcel Trudeau, of course, sweating beneath a layer of Gaspard’s clothes when they searched his chest.

“Well, well!” the Irish pirate chortled. “Looks like the Frenchy keeps more in his toy box than pistols. “Out ye come, laddie. Let’s have a look at ye.”

Helpless to do aught else, Mirabella sat up, blinking her eyes in the thin light of the cabin. Grasping the edge of the chest, she pulled herself up to sit, then stand, acutely aware of the pirates’ consideration.

“Scrawny thing,” the Portuguese pirate pointed out the obvious. “Won’t be much help for crewing.”

The Irishman hummed. “He might make a decent cabin boy,” he mused. “If he’s been serving the Frenchy like I suspect, we could always put him in a dress and make him an honorary dames de voyage. I’m certain Salvatore will find him a vast improvement over a lump of straw.”

Mirabella felt a flash of fear strike like lightning in her veins. If they put a dress over her was one thing. She didn’t mind serving as a dance partner if that’s what they needed to alleviate their boredom. But there’s no way she could risk having them strip her and have her secrets exposed.

Climbing out of her hiding space, she stood back to let them finish searching. They managed to find the hidden compartment where Gaspard kept extra coins and jewelry. Satisfied that they’d discovered everything of value, they herded her down the hall and up the stairs to the main deck, where everyone else was assembled.

Prisoners, all.

A throaty moan she easily recognized came from nearby. Wondering what in God’s name was happening, she craned her neck and spied the newlyweds, draped facedown over two barrels sitting side by side. Both of them were being taken like animals, used for the pirates’ pleasure.

Claire Marta-The Yuletide King

The Yule season is rapidly approaching, and Claire Marta has given us an early present. The Yuletide King is a fairy tale, in the truest and most literal sense. The fae are involved in the book, so fairy tale. And it really has a fairy tale feel, in the sense that we usually use the term. There’s a lot of happiness, sadness, and angst going on.

The story starts with Lyra, who has a little bit of magic, but not a lot. Basically, she can make fireworks, and that’s it. Her village thinks that she is unlucky, and so they are going to sacrifice her to the beast, Krampus. They tie her to a stake and leave her out in the freezing cold. Willingly. They really want to ditch her.

Luckily for Lyra, Jack Frost stops by and rescues her. She’s barely alive by the time he gets her, so he takes her someplace where he knows that she will be safe, the Kingdom of King Nickalaus. Nick rescues her and takes her to warm her up and saves her life. Nick is strangely drawn to her, but he’s worried that she’s a spy.

Lyra is nursed back to health, and starts working in the castle, and makes friends. Then she’s mysteriously taken from her bed and left out in the middle of the woods at night, surrounded by wolves. Nick realizes what has happened, and rushes away to save her. After saving her, all kinds of sexy fun times happen. And Lyra becomes Nick’s mistress, much to the anger of most of the other women in the castle, especially Lady Estel, who is a massive bitch, BTW.

I really loved the feel of this story. Like I said, it feels like an old school fairy tale, something that Hans Christian Anderson or the Brothers Grimm would write, but with a happier ending than you would see out of either of those groups. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I really love Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm, but if you look at the non-Disneyfied stories, they are a little gory and not necessarily a happy ending. But, I get some of the same feel from King as I do from those older stories. I don’t know if Claire purposely did that, or if it is me, or what, but there it is.

I like Lyra. She has a very sweet nature, she really wants to do what she can to help people, and she wants to be happy and have the people around her happy. She also wants to have somewhere she belongs and someone she belongs with. She thinks that maybe Nick can be that person and his kingdom that place.

Oh, Nick made me so mad sometimes. I mostly like him, but he occasionally just pisses me off to no end at all. I kinda wanted to smack him. I understand some of his actions during the book, and I can almost even understand why he did the things that pissed me off. Doesn’t mean that they didn’t piss me off. And I think that he maybe went a little further with certain things than he should’ve.

I would love to see more in this world, because I’m utterly fascinated by it.

Skye Warren-Best Kept Secret

This is the last book in the Rochester Trilogy. The release date for Best Kept Secret jumped around, and at one point it was supposed to come out in January, but Skye worked through what was going on in her life, and managed to release it today. I’m grateful that she managed to do that, because I’ve been waiting and waiting for this one to come out. I mean, I was counting down the days from the second I finished reading the second one. So, let’s get to this one.

Since this is a trilogy, there are going to be spoilers in this, especially since this book picks up from right where the last one left off. If you haven’t read the other books and you are interested in them, you might want to put down my review and read the books and then come back. If you get spoiled after this point, you only have yourself to blame, because you have been warned.

So, Beau has sent Jane back to Houston. He did it so that he can keep her safe, but no one is happy about it. When Jane gets home, she finds out that Emily, Paige’s dead mom, is sitting in her bedroom, waiting to talk to her. Emily says that she had to fake her death, because someone was on the boat with her and her husband. That someone shot her husband, and if she hadn’t screamed, the murderer would never have known she was there. Emily wants to get away from the murderer, so she jumps into the ocean, and hopes that she can swim to shore. Luckily, she makes it, but Emily also realizes that she has to stay hidden for her safety and Paige’s safety. As a mother, everything she does is to protect Paige.

Emily convinces Jane to go back to Maine. Emily tells her the sad story behind her death, and then asks Jane to help her convince Beau to help her. Emily isn’t sure that Beau will believe her. Poor Emily has spent so many years in a terrible relationship, so I don’t blame her for not thinking that anyone will believe her, especially Beau. After all, she tried to get Beau to help her before, and he didn’t.

When Jane gets to Beau and Paige, she is so happy and so are they. When Paige goes to bed, Jane tells Beau the whole story, and lets him make the next move.

I really like Beau and Jane together. I think that they are quite a team. They are good on their own, but when you put them together, I think that there is very little that they can’t do. I mean, they figure things out and how to make things work, and Jane is stubborn and smart, and she knows what she wants. Beau is smart and he’s willing to give Jane anything that she wants.

I was prepared to really hate Emily at the end of the last book, but we got to know her so much more in this one, and I don’t dislike her at all. I do feel sorry for her, because she is so damaged by her past. It’s really hard to get past all that damage when you are still living in it, and have no doubts about it, she is still very much living in it because even though Rhys is dead, she hasn’t been in a place, emotionally or physically, to try and heal from all her trauma. We get a couple of chapters from her POV, which is nice. It also looks like we are going to get a book for her sometime soon, so yay!

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite classics. I’ve always liked the character of Jane. I think that she is really strong and independent and she’s a survivor, all things that I like very much. I really liked Skye’s reworking of it and how she fleshed out the story without drifting too far from the core story.

OK, that’s all for this one. Go check it out! Happy reading!

Raisa Greywood-Black Light: Saved

So, Saved is the extension of Raisa’s story in the latest Black Light Roulette anthology. Here’s where I’m bad and admit I haven’t read everything in the anthology yet. I own it, I just need to remember that I have it. My TBR is ridiculous. Anyway, I can tell you from experience that you can get the thrust of the story without having read Kacy and Jafari’s experience at Roulette. It would definitely be better with that backstory. Hopefully, I’ll remember to read the anthology this weekend, but who knows if my broken memory will work that long. OK, enough of that, let’s get to the story.

We have Kacy and Jafari who met at Roulette and had a connection. Their scenes were super hot, and Kacy loved every bit of it. She wakes up to a phone call to find out that she has to leave LA immediately and make it to Kentucky. There is a family problem, and she has to go rescue her younger cousin from their evil uncle. But, Kacy is broke and living in her car, and she doesn’t have the money to get there, so since she’s sneaking out, she gets into Jafari’s wallet and takes about $500. Jafari is awake, but he’s pretending to be asleep to find out what Kacy is going to do. Kacy leaves the suite they are in, and heads down to her car so that she can get to KY.

As soon as she closes the door, Jafari jumps out of bed and reads the note she left. Then he calls Jaxson and arranges to borrow a car, and oh, by the way, have the guards grab Kacy and stick her in the car to wait for him. He’s decided that he’s going to go to KY with her. He gets Kacy to tell him what the problem is, and then he decides that they are going to fly to KY instead of drive from CA.

The story is that Kacy’s grandmother just died. She’s been taking care of Kacy’s 7 year old cousin, Macie. Macie is now in the custody of their nasty uncle, who likes little girls a little too much. Kacy is rushing there to save Macie from the uncle, lie to the court to get guardianship, and then rush back to CA, where they will both be safe. Of course, Kacy still won’t have a job, and she still won’t have a house, and when she tells Jafari all of that, he arranges for an attorney to meet them in KY, and for her to have a job working as a graphic designer for his winery and for Jaxson. And to help her find an apartment.

I like both Kacy and Jafari. I was really frustrated with both of them more than once. They are both keeping secrets from the other, they don’t talk about them, which they really should. They also don’t communicate their feelings to and about each other very well. That leads to a lot of problems, since they are both making assumptions about what the other person wants and is going to do. All that ever does is hurt yourself and hurt other people. And you might even drag someone who is totally innocent in the middle and hurt them even worse. Like I said, very frustrated with them.

Kacy is very independent and stubborn, and hearing her backstory, I understand why she is that way. It’s hard to ask for help at all, and from her background, asking anyone for help would be a terrible thing to do. She is also very loyal and has a strong protective streak. I think that she is also very loving.

I like Jafari. He has such a wonderful, caring, loving heart. He may be a sadist when it comes to play, but in the rest of his life, he is very careful with people and how he treats them. He doesn’t go out of his way to cause undue harm to people, but he will if need be.

I think that Macie is just a delight. She really just leaves a lot of joy in her wake.

OK, that’s all for this one. Go check it out. Happy reading!

Grace Goodwin-Claimed by the Cyborgs

Back to Grace and her Interstellar Brides. As you can tell by the title Claimed by the Cyborgs, we’re back on the Colony. And this one made me very sad sometimes. All three of the main characters, because we’re dealing with Prillons, are very broken, and I just couldn’t help pulling for them from the very beginning and wanting for their relationship to succeed. I had a real visceral need for them to get their HEA.

Like usual, we start at bride testing, with Danika getting tested. She’s a volunteer from jail. She’s only 23, but she’s spent 7 years in jail for committing a murder, and now she’s looking for something she hasn’t had, pretty much ever. She wants love, stability, safety, and a home. She doesn’t trust the program or the wardens when they say that is exactly what she is going to have, but she’ll try to hope. Danika ends up with a 99% match to a Prillon warrior, and the warden explains that means that she’s going to have 2 mates, the primary that she’s matched to, and a second that he chooses. Danika, all hopped up from her testing, thinks that’s just about alright with her. She really liked her testing.

As a side note, we didn’t have Warden Egara doing most of the testing. She’s training someone new, but we did at least get to see everyone’s favorite warden. I really want her to have a happy ending with a new warrior or warriors. I think maybe being matched to Prillons again might not be the best for her. Maybe an Atlan?

Anyway, on the Colony, we have Thomar and Varin. Thomar is Danika’s match, but he is refusing to take a bride, and it’s not because he’s a jerk or anything. He and Varin have only been at the Colony for a couple of days, and only because Dr. Sunnar is there, and he has been very successful in removing Hive implants. You see, Thomar and Varin were held by the Hive for over 2 years, and were tortured and experimented on. Among other things, the Hive implanted Thomar’s mating collars in the guys, and caused them to create a mind link. Thomar is in constant pain, and is pretty much always triggered. Varin can just barely managed to keep Thomar as stable as possible, and he helps bear Thomar’s pain, which is intense. To top it all off, Thomar really just wants to die. So the guys agree that they will refuse their bride.

When Danika hears that, she first is frustrated and kind of accepting, because she knew that this would happen. But when she learns more about Thomar and Varin, she decides fuck that, and that she’s going to fight for them. Thomar and she matched 99%, which means that they are perfect for each other, and she’s not willing to let that go. She decides that she’s going to get real up close and personal with the guys, because she is going to claim them, whether they like it or not.

Thomar and Varian are stubborn af, but they really don’t have a patch on Danika. I honestly don’t think that they could possibly out stubborn her, no matter how hard they try. Even combined, she manages to get her way. She doesn’t push, she doesn’t cry, she doesn’t manipulate, she just says that this is the way that it’s going to be, and it is. She also does everything she can to protect her guys. And that includes facing down Helion, the head of IC, who I really, really, really hate.

Danika is a survivor and a protector. I mean, don’t get me wrong, T & V are too, but Danika has always been that, and for the majority of her very short life, she’s had to be that, and there has been no one to back her up, so when she sees Varin and Thomar, and how much they really need someone who will protect them and stand up for them, they trigger her instincts, so, she does what she needs to. I think that she may be one of my favorite Brides.

In fact, I think that this trio may be one of my favorite pairings. I mean, I love pretty much every pairing, and we all know how I feel about Atlans, but there is something about the way that these 3 very damaged and broken beings come together and make one unit that is really special, and something that I don’t think we’ve seen as much in the IBP world until now. Yeah, there’s been broken characters, but the damage in this one is so profound.

I can’t wait to see what Grace has planned for the IBP world. We learned some interesting stuff in this one, so I’m really excited.

Minette Moreau-Wicked Rage

Minette Moreau may sound like a new author to me and the blog, but she’s not. She’s actually a new pen name from Raisa Greywood. Minette is Raisa’s paranormal nom de plume, so if you go looking for the previous 2 Wicked Magic books, make sure that you are looking under the right name. But, we’re not here to talk about those books, we’re here to talk about the newest one, Wicked Rage. And check back later on this week to catch Raisa’s other release.

This is the 3rd book in the series, and it’s Rizan and Feather’s story. Feather is a half bear/half mage young woman, and Rizan is an ancient dragon, and brother to the current dragon king. And oh yeah, he’s Feather’s mate. But, he made a deal with everyone that he would let Feather go to college before they sealed their mating and their familiar bond. So far, all he really does is lurk around her to keep an eye on her. But the book starts out on Feather’s prom night, and she’s helping her best friend get ready. Feather isn’t going, for many reasons, but one of which is the fact that Rizan would do grievous bodily harm to any male touching Feather. Somehow, Rizan finds out how important prom night is as a milestone, so he surprises Feather at her house with a beautiful dress, jewelry, shoes, and a 1951 Jag. (BTW? Somehow=Feather’s parents)

That night, Feather and Rizan do alllllll the traditional prom activities, and it is magical, quite literally. Then it’s time for graduation and for Feather to leave. She’s leaving her tiny town in Arizona to go to college in England and Rizan is counting down the hours. She also suggests to Rizan that he figures out something to do while she’s at school for the next 5 years.

College isn’t all that Feather thought it would be, and there are troubles in the UK. Feather finds out about the problems, and moves to do something about it, but before she can, bad things happen.

Meanwhile, back in the US, Rizan has decided that he’s going to join the Army. He does, and joins two natured unit, headed by a kick ass tiger, who promptly kicks his dragon ass, which I loved altogether. A few weeks into training, he found out that his mate has disappeared. He goes to find her, along with a crack team.

Five years later, Feather is still missing, and Rizan is now counting down the days until his stint in the Army is done so that he can go search for her. He and his team have searched for her, but nothing yet.

I like Rizan. He’s got a really interesting journey through this. I think that the military was good for him. It knocked sense into him when no one else really had yet. Feather made some impressions on him, but Kali made more. I think that he really grew up, which yes, is weird to say about a dragon that has been alive for millennia and survived hundreds and hundreds of years in a hellscape, but that doesn’t change my opinion.

Feather is really smart, really powerful, and incredibly fierce. She has strong allies, apart from Rizan, and she did a lot in the big war. I think that some of that gave her a slightly lowered sense of personal danger. So far, between her own power and all of the powerful beings she knows and loves, there hasn’t really been anything that she can’t handle, so she feels like she can handle just about everything. Which, TBF, is also a trait of a teenager, and she’s only 18, no matter how much she’s been through and what she’s done. She just doesn’t have the same amount of life experience behind her. She has a lot of loss from the war, but there’s still a weird spot that she falls in.

Feather’s journey is a particularly painful one, and I teared up about it more than once. Raisa is occasionally mean to her characters. Well, I say occasionally… I’m not going to say that good things came out of the pain, because I think that it diminishes both the sheer level of pain she went through as well as the results thereof. I know that growth needs struggle and often pain and all, but I feel like it dishonors her suffering. Does that make sense? It does in my head, at least.

Anyway, that’s all for this one. You really should go pick it up and give it a read. Happy reading!

Magenta is a rare red maned wolf shifter. She’s the featured performer at The Pole Barn, a private club near Las Vegas, Nevada, but it’s not where she plans to spend her life.

Magenta—aka Rory Lockheart—dreams of more.

When trouble comes knocking on Magenta’s door, it’s Quake who comes to her rescue. She’s the stuff of his dreams, but women like her don’t date even when attraction ignites between them.

After Magenta is kidnapped, all evidence points to the low-life jackal shifters in the Death’s Head MC. Can Quake find the rare beauty before it’s too late, or will she disappear from his life forever?

Dangerous Curves is the Guarded Hearts Season Two prequel. Quake and Magenta’s story continues in Hell’s Fury MC: Rory (Guarded Hearts Book 8). This story ends in a cliffhanger and has adult situations and potential triggers. Written for Ages 18+.
