Gone Fishin’

Well, metaphorically speaking at least. To actually go fishing would mean I would have to go sit outside for hours on end. No thank you.

So, the past year has been hard on everyone. There has just been a whole lot going on for everyone, and it’s no different for me. I’ve had a lot happen in the past few months, and I’m tired. I’m going to take the rest of April off, except for one post next week, a commitment I can’t break. I just need the time to catch my breath, rest, relax, and probably get high.

I’ll still be reading, and if you follow me on GR or check in here once in a while, you can keep up with what I’ve been reading and reviewing. Frankly, I’d have to be dead to stop reading, and that might not even do it.

So, until May 1, everyone go out, find a book you like, sit down, and practice some self-care. Stay safe, get your shots, and avoid other people like the plague.

Sara Fields-Rough

Sara has written a new book in her Alpha Brotherhood series. This is a dark omeagverse series with a wonderful overall storyline that keeps me really interested along with all that hot sexy sex. So, let’s talk about Rough, shall we?

So, we have Ariana, who is a member of the Brotherhood, and an omega. She’s being marched to Kingsworth because she was abducted by members of the evil Cult that she and the Brotherhood are trying to take down. She ends up in their dungeons with a lot of other omegas. After some testing, she gets dragged in front of some masked and robed people who tell her that she is going to be taken before the new king, Magnar, and is going to be gifted to him.

Magnar has spent years working his way up through the Cult so that he could be in the position that he is in. He has no plans to take an omega, ever. But, when he is gifted Ariana by higherups in the Cult, he knows that he has to take her. That’s OK, he has a special room attached to his room, and she will be able to live there, and he won’t have to worry about her making him weak. Nor does he have to worry about her finding out his secrets, because he has some. And his secrets could end up causing him some real problems.

Ariana, being the daughter of the head of the Brotherhood, is really smart and very well trained. She’s sneaky, tricksy, and very strategic. She takes any and all information that she gets, saves it, and then puts it into her brain where she can plug it in with everything else she knows. Because she is trapped in this room by Magnar, she has plenty of time to think. And she has a library locked in with her, and plenty of time to read. Knowledge is power, and Ariana is really powerful.

Magnar has more going on than it looks like. He’s really smart, but I think that he’s pretty happy to be underestimated by everyone, because it lets him do what he needs to do. He has some serious plans that I think that a lot of people wouldn’t like and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens when those plans get put into place.

Anthology-Outlaws

When I signed up for the ARC of this one, I didn’t really read the blurbs. I don’t always, depending on who the authors are. With Yolanda, Petra, and Ally, I knew that it would be good whatever it was. So, when I started to read Outlaws, I wasn’t sure what I was going to get, but I knew it was going to be good. And holy fuck, was it. Now , before you start to read this, be aware that the title doesn’t refer to bikers, Mafia guys, or anything like that. I’m pretty sure that it comes from jokes about outlaws and in-laws.

All of these stories are filthy. Some of them are so filthy I need a shower just from thinking about them. They all take the thought of family to a whole other level. They are twisted and will leave you questioning your personal morality.

Yolanda Olson-Susurration

First off, I just need to say how much I love the title. It’s a fun word. Susurration means whispering or murmuring. And it is highly appropriate for this story. Yolanda left me with more questions than she answered, but that’s a very her thing to do. It’s a short story, but it is perfectly done, with enough tension and all.

AA Davies-Unruly

The characters in this aren’t exactly family or in-laws, but they are close. I really liked how the story ended up, and I’m not entirely sure that I would call this one quite as twisted as the others, but it is definitely twisted. I really like Remi though.

JM Walker-Her Little

You remember me saying that some of these are so filthy that I need to take a shower just thinking about them? Well, this would be one of those stories. It really is filthy AF. I mean, yeah. The only thing that dimmed it slightly for me was that I was hoping for some Little action going on, because of the title. I can see where it could lean that way, and overall, I’m not disappointed in it, so there’s that.

Ally Vance-Fragile Vows

Twins. ‘Nuff said. OK, not really. I think that Ally went to an interesting place with this. It didn’t happen quite the way I expected, but I’m not going to complain, because I think her way was better.

Jason Hes-The Scent of Wolves

This is my first Jason Hes story, but I will be seeking more. He dragged me in and left me with wanting so much more, in the very best way. I’m itching for more.

Petra Knox-His Best Interest

I really liked this one. Not necessarily for the sexy bits, although, those were really good, but I thought that Petra did a great job of creating awesome characters in a very short story. That’s a lot harder to do than you might think.

Cole Denton-Secrets

Yeah, this family has so many secrets. So, so, so many secrets. We learn some of them, but I’m pretty sure that there are a lot more somewhere, hiding. I would love to get a continuation in this world. Go Wolverines!

Oh, I’m so sad. This is the last of the Drakeon books. Well, the authors have promised us an extended epilogue kind of thing sometime this year, but still, no more books with the smexy dragons, and I love the smexy dragons. So, let’s talk about Draekon Guardian, shall we?

Yafet was known as Sixth, back when he was one of the original Draekon. Now, along with most of his brothers, he’s helping the rebellion and trying to fight their other brother, First, who is more than a little bat shit crazy. Yafet was sent after a couple of humans to rescue them. He brought them both back, but one of them, Liz, was his mate. He’s been trying to put off mating her and staying away from her. It worked really well for a while because he was busy trying to cure a plague. But now, it’s getting harder and harder. He knows that he shouldn’t do anything with her, and the thought that First might get his hands on her is just scary AF. He’s still working with all the medical researchers trying to cure the plague that First has created, because they know that he is going to deploy it again at some point.

Liz knows that she’s attracted to Yafet, but he never comes around her. She just stays in her room, never leaves, and is just terribly depressed, which really, I don’t blame her for. Her roommate manages to pull her out of it and takes her to a market. As a chef and cookbook writer, taking her to a huge market where she can find all kinds of food is the perfect thing for Liz. But, they run into problems at the market, and all her food gets left in a locker. Until it turns out that the food turns up in her apartment along with a new cooking unit.

Liz is dealing with some depression, and frankly, I don’t blame her one little bit. I would definitely be dealing with some serious mental health issues at that point too. Her whole world has changed and trying to deal with everything was just a lot. I think that she is really smart and creative though, and once she finds something to latch on to, then she’s better. And that’s something that she actually did on her own, mostly. I thought that was great for her and her own mental health, and her self-esteem. I think that she is also really fierce and she’s not going to let anyone mess with her, if she can avoid it, at least.

Yafet is definitely a good man. Dragon. Whatever. He has a huge streak of responsibility in him, and he can’t really cut himself any slack. He works really hard so that he can find the cure for this plague and he kind of blames himself. Which, it’s understandable why he does blame himself, even though neither he or any of his brothers have anything to blame themselves for. They were put into a fucking horrible situation by their creator, and the rebels didn’t make a lot of it easier when they first came out of stasis, but the rebels did at least straighten up. I think that he’s really smart and caring. I think that he’s also a little bit stupid. At least when it comes to relationships he is. But, don’t worry, Liz has some lessons for him.
