Nicolina Martin-Saving Sandra

Saving Sandra is the second book in Nicolina’s West Coast Doms book. For a refresher, Commanding Casey was the first one. In that book, Cole was the male main character, and his ex-wife is Sandra, the female main character in this one. CC got darkish at times, but this one? It gets lightish at times. And I’m not going to lie, I straight up fucking hated Samuel for a chunk of time. I had complicated feelings about him for most of the book. And I fucking love that. So, let’s talk about the book, shall we?

Sandra is an actress, and she’s currently filming. The director isn’t listening to her and her co-start is faking a relationship with her for the publicity of the movie. She’s being followed by paparazzi, she has to show up at events, and she has to be “ON” all the time. She has her two kids every other week, so when she doesn’t have her kids, she tries to do all the business type stuff so that she can spend time with her kids while they are there. All in all, Sandra is just fucking exhausted. She is never just herself anymore, she has to always be Sandra the Star or Sandra the Mommy.

So, one night, when she’s drunk, Sandra starts an account on a kinky dating site. When she checks the next day, she takes a few minutes and all of a sudden, starts talking to Savage666. And, well, let’s just say that Savage fits him quite well. He outright tells her that he wants to hurt her, that he enjoys hurting her, and the things that he says he wants to do sound scary but Sandra is all for them, even if she is scared spitless. (That’s OK, she’s wet in other places)

We first meet Savage666, AKA Samuel, when he’s talking to a psych doc, talking about his past. And well, he’s not necessarily nice, but the nice lady psych doc is intrigued by him. And she’s more than happy to be intrigued by him, at least, until he leaves.

He’s cruising through a kinky site and he finds Breathless and starts to talk to her. He decides that she’s going to be his, so he slowly starts to reel her in. Any time that Breathless has an objection, he either has an answer or he just cuts contact until she works through them on her own and then waits for her to contact him. He is always completely bluntly honest with her and tells her what he wants from her and what he wants her to do.

I like Sandra, most of the time. I really get the being tired part and trying to find something for herself part. It’s hard to try to be everything to everyone. She has to hide herself all of the time, and that’s just so hard. I don’t blame her for being tired to her soul. There are a few times when I kinda want to smack her, but that’s my annoyance speaking. It wasn’t any big thing at any point, it was just something that would trigger that. I never thought that she was too stupid to live, but I did think that there were a couple of times that she really just skirted that line really closely. Then again, I don’t know that the story would’ve worked as well if she made different decisions at that point.

OK, let’s talk about Samuel. I do have very complex feelings about him. At the beginning, I really hated him. But then we hit a point where boom, I feel a whole different way about him. In the beginning of the book, and when he’s first talking to Sandra, he talks about how much of a monster he is and how horrible, terrible, awful, and bad he is. I think that maybe he wasn’t as bad and monstrous as he said he was. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not a nice guy. He does bad shit. He’s an asshole. Period. But, I don’t think that he’s quite as bad as he says or thinks he is. I think he uses it to protect himself, subconsciously. I mean, I think that the top of his brain really believes it, but the bottom of his brain knows better and it’s trying to protect itself. Does that make sense? It does in my head, and that’s the important part.

I was trying to explain to my husband about my feelings about Samuel, and I think that I did OK, which helped me write the last paragraph, but like I said, complex af.

OK, nothing below the pic today. Go check it out! Happy reading!

Kate Rudolph-Dekon

I think that this is my first Kate Rudolph book here, but it’s not the first one I’ve read. I own several of the earlier books in this series, and it’s one that I tend to enjoy. So, let’s get to Dekon, shall we?

OK, this is a fated mate scifi romance. The way that it works is that the aliens are a species called Detyens. Their species is dying off. Part of that is because if you don’t meet your denya, your soul mate, by the time you are 30, you are dead. Pfft. Game over. There are so few Detyens left in the universe, it was nearly impossible to find their denya, but then one lucky male found out that humans are compatible. Now, the Detyens are slowly moving to Earth, hoping that they can find denya. OK, now that you have the basics of the world down, let’s get to the specifics.

When Manda was a tween, she was stolen by aliens. She had terrible, horrible, very bad things happen to her. After 5 years, she was saved by Detyens and brought home. But while she was gone, her parents went out to try and find her, and now they are out in space. But Dekon and his brother find her parents and are bringing them home. There’s just one problem for Deke. He’s pretty sure that Manda is his denya, which is a good thing. She’s only 16 and is recovering from MAJOR trauma, which is a bad thing. He doesn’t want to do anything that will stunt her growth or her recovery. He also doesn’t want to torture himself by spending years around her without being able to claim her. So, he decides, for both their sakes’ that he will leave. He leaves and ends up being a merc.

Five years later, he’s tired and is basically trying to kill himself. But after some thought, he decides to go to a Temple of Peace and try to fix himself. He lets his family know, and he lets Manda know. Manda is PISSED. She’s been waiting for years for him to come home, and he hasn’t talked to her at all during those years. She knows that she’s probably his denya, and so does his family, who she is close to. She decides that she’s not going to stand for his shit anymore. She’s going to go out and get her man.

I thought that Manda was very mentally and emotionally strong. She went out and was going to do the things that she wants to do, even if it’s scary, like going out to space. I love her thought that she probably won’t be abducted by aliens twice. She has had to fight, hard, to be where she is. She has to fight so that she could be better. She had to fight hard to deal with her parents, and all her feelings with them. I have so much respect for her and her strength and her will.

I understand why Dekon did the things that he did. He really was kind of in that I’m going to be damned if I do and damned if I don’t, so either way, I’m just damned. It had to be so hard for him to know what Manda was to him but have to deal with her being young, physically, and deal with her trauma which can make her older mentally and emotionally. There’s that. I think that he’s a good male, and he did, most of the time, the things that were the right things to do.

OK, nothing down below today. Go check it out!

Do I Read Non-Fiction?

I’m 100% sure that this is a burning question that none of you have actually wondered whether or not I ever read non-fiction. Well, the answer to that is yes, yes I do. Not as much as I used to, back before college, but I do still read it. When I do read non-fiction, I have a few very narrow fields that I read.

English Royal History

I am fascinated by the history of the English royal family. Don’t ask me why. And to be even more precise, it’s about the women of the English royal family. I love Eleanor of Aquitaine and Elizabeth I. That doesn’t mean that I won’t read about any royal woman, because I totally will. I particularly like to read books by Alison Weir. She is a historian and focuses on the women of the royal family. She writes biographies where she shows all her academic work, but she also writes historical fiction, that takes all that work and, well, fictionalizes it.

One of my favorite books by Weir is a book about Katherine Swynford, called Mistress of the Monarchy. She was the mistress of John of Gaunt. He was the son of Edward III, and the founder of the House of Lancaster. Well, I say mistress, but they eventually married, with Katherine as his 3rd wife. Their 5 children, all born prior to their marriage, were eventually legitimized and given the last name of Beaufort. Beaufort is a huge name in English and Scottish history. In fact, her son is what gave Henry Tudor his claim on the throne. Anyway, every reigning king or queen of England since the mid 1400s has been descended from Katherine, which is pretty damned impressive.

Poxes, Pandemics, and Plagues

Yup, I like to read about plagues and pandemics. Back when I was in college two of my favorite classes where taught by the same woman. She had a double doctorate, a PhD in history and an MD. She taught a class about plagues in history and one about the Black Death. Those were fascinating classes, and of all the classes I took, the books from those classes were some of the only books I kept. I was a single mother trying to do college, even with all the financial aid I could get, I needed the money from selling back my books. I can still lay my hands on those books, even after a cross country move and 20+ years. I have more on my Kindle.

And yes, I am fascinated by watching the history of what’s going on happening right in front of us. And scared.

Random

While I do have those two specific narrow topics I read, I also have some random non-fiction books that I read. They may be biographies, like the book about RBG, or books that could fall into the self-help categories, like 3 by various drag queens. I also have books about queer history. And I can’t miss the books about true crime and forensics.

So, yeah, I read non-fiction. I suppose I should review one some day.

Felicity Brandon-Her Dark Nemesis

This is the 3rd of the Gates of Fortorus books. I don’t know if Felicity is leaving this world alone now that we’ve gotten through Her Dark Nemesis or not. I’m not sure if I want to be really mad at her if she is or to be satisfied with the ending of this one. The ending is a wow, for sure, and frankly, I think that I’m happy with either way that Felicity choose to go. Of course, that didn’t stop me from yelling “Damn you, Felicity!!!” when I got to the end. My husband has now gotten used to me yelling lke that during books and doesn’t even try to get me to explain anymore, which is good, because it’s hard to sometimes. As a reminder, there will likely be spoilers for the previous books. I’ll try to limit them, but because of the way that they are written, it’s hard.

So, Caroline has managed to get out of the Commander’s headquarters. Of course, it didn’t hurt that she beaned him with a decanter and she’s pretty sure that he’s dead. All she knows is that now is her big chance, and she’s not going to miss out on it. So, she grabs some of Harper’s clothes and leaves through the window. Since she’s been with him, she knows roughly how to get out of the grounds, so she heads that way. That’s when she discovers that she’s not the only person out there.

Caroline and her companion manage to get out of the Fortorous grounds and find a farm to hide on, with a sort of friendly farmer, who tells them where they are, and gives them some food. But, then come the guards, and things change. Caroline ends up back in the Commander’s quarters.

Meanwhile, while Caroline is out and about, running free, Harper has been found bloodied and unconscious on the floor of his quarters. His private doctor comes and helps him out, and tells him that he needs to get checked out better, but there’s just one smalll problem. Or more like one huge problem. The President is about to show up and Harper doesn’t want him to know that anyone has escaped, let alone Caroline. It would be a huge problem, altogether, and it would just make the President even more paranoid and crazy, which yeah. Luckily, for Harper at least, they are able to capture Caroline and bring her back.

There are incels, and then there is this douchebag. I mean the President is basically the Incel King. The only way that he’s getting any play right now is because he can force women into it, literally. I mean, the women just have no choice. I don’t think that there is anyone who is going to orchestrate a takeover like the one described here, but I guarantee that there are men in the world who would be more than happy to do everything that the asshat is doing in this book, without a qualm. Ugh. I really want to use some KGB-esque poisoning methods on him. (Dear FBI, please understand that I’m only talking about the douchebag president in this book and I would never, ever hurt President Biden.)

Caroline still has all the fire and spunk that she has had in the previous two books. I think it’s going to take a lot of work for that to go away. She is still torn between the different parts of herself, and I still understand why. She really is in an unteneable situation, and it’s not something that I can ever even imagine what I’d do in her place. I mean, I’d like to assume that I’d be like Caroline and fiesty, because well, I am fiesty and I have a small issue with authority, but until you are in her shoes, you just can’t know. I just have one question for Felicity though. So many of her heroines are writers. Are we seeing some serious fantasy here? LOL.

Harper. Well. I can’t go into what I’m feeling abaout him right now without getting into serious spoilers. Let’s just say that the things I like about him are still there.

Oh, I don’t even know what I should put here. I know what I want to put where, but that would be more spoilers than I ever put anywhere. Let’s just say that I’m still stunned by the end.

OK, that’s all for this one. Go check it out! Happy reading!
