Susan Hawke-How to Live

This the contemporary pen name of Susi Hawke, who is one of my fave MM omegaverse authors. How to Live is the 7th book in her Livestrong series. I’ve reviewed and talked about this series in the past, and I can’t even say how much I love them. So, let’s talk about Asher and Derek. Before I get started, I want to warn people that this book does talk about breast cancer, because, well, main character and all.

Asher is a tattoo artist. He also has 4 other brothers, one of them is his twin. He and his brothers, except for his twin, aren’t related to each other. They were fostered by their mama, who raised them all. She’s pretty damn awesome. Anyway, Asher has ADHD, loves to tattoo, works all the hours of the day, and isn’t really in a relationship with anyone. He is a good man who loves his family and the people in his shop. He has done pretty well in his life, and he works on giving back to the community regularly. He does things like provide tattoo coverups to former gang members and free tattoos to breast cancer survivors to cover their scars. He’s just a helluva good guy.

Then we have Derek. Derek is actually a sweet guy, if not hopelessly naive. He has lived the last couple of years with his grandmother, who he moved in with after his dad kicked him out for being gay. She has recently died from breast cancer, and his father is kicking him out of the house. Again. Derek’s family is rich, and he has spent his life pretty insulated from everything and he doesn’t really know how to adult. And? On top of all of that, he has just found out that he has breast cancer. Yes, breast cancer.

Cis males have some mammary tissue, which means that they can get breast cancer. It is a lot rarer, and men have a much lower survival rate because by the time anyone thinks breast cancer, it has gotten pretty damn bad.

Derek decides that this is just the heaping spoonful of shit sprinkles on top of his shit sundae. He doesn’t want to die in his 20s of breast cancer. He also doesn’t want his boyfriend of 5 years to watch him die. So, Derek makes some choices. Those choices include destroying his relationship with his boyfriend, spectacuarly. Then he borrowed money from a loan shark and flew to Atlantic City. And he gambled. And gambled. And gambled.

I thought that Derek was a really sweet guy, but, seriously naive, and he couldn’t adult to save his life. Then again, he’s never had to. There has always been staff who has been there to do everything from his laundry to driving him around. If you don’t have someone who teaches you how to adult, it is really hard for you to figure it out. Plus, he has all these things happening in a relatively short time. His grandmother dies, without changing her will, so his dad, who hates him, inherits everything, which means daddy dearest is going to kick him out. Then Derek gets cancer. So boom, even the most adulty adult is going to be at a loss at that point. Just one of those things is bad enough, but all of them? Yeah.

I think that Derek and Asher really are so good for each other. They fix parts in each other that are maybe not broken, but definitely fractured or bent badly. Both of these guys really need to have a lot of love, and they both have so much love to give. I mean, you see what kind of man Asher is with all his charity work. And Derek has done a lot of charity work, and he just is like this little light, IMO.

On a sort of side note. I personally hate the way that some of the way that breast cancer awareness gets talked about. Some of the phrases really seem to ignore the fact that the tatas and boobies are attached to real women, and focusing on that instead of the women can be hurtful. Also, all the pink ribbon stuff bothers me because of the Susan G. Komen foundation, which is seriously shady. Anyway, those are just my grumble about these things, and aren’t related to the book at all, really.

Nothing under the pic today. Go check it out! Happy reading!

 LOVESTRONG, Book 7

Take one clueless, spoiled guy with notoriously bad luck…

When Derek Leigh is diagnosed with breast cancer at twenty-four, it’s the final straw in a lifetime of bad luck. If he’s going to die, it’ll be on his terms… with one helluva party that packs a lifetime’s worth of fun into whatever time he has left. To make this happen, Derek blows up his life: dumps the long-term boyfriend in the worst way possible, borrows money he can’t repay from a loan shark, and heads to Atlantic City… where his luck unexpectedly changes, giving him fresh hope.

Add one easygoing tattoo artist with a big, open heart…

Asher Matthews has dealt with a lot in his thirty-five years: he and his twin were born addicted to heroin and abandoned at birth… until Mama Maisie added them to her brood of lost boys. ADHD and dyslexia didn’t keep him from following his dream of opening his own tattoo shop, especially with his family’s support. With all that he’s been given in life, Asher makes a point of giving back where he can.

To equal two men who instantly connect in all the best ways.

Derek is shocked to not only survive his cancer treatment, but to come to the end of it in great health. Too bad he’s blown through all his money, lost his car, and has nowhere to turn. On a whim, he goes for a free tattoo. Asher takes one look at the sexy twink who’s down on his luck and offers him a room, a job, and even better, a friend. If they have a little no-strings fun along the way, it’s fine. It’s not like anyone is looking to fall in love, right?

This 55k novel is the seventh book in the LOVESTRONG series about finding love and being yourself in a small town. Watch out for ridiculous amounts of money won and lost, a butler who takes everything in stride, and a scruffy dog you’ll want to cuddle. This is an mm romance full of all the fun, laughter, and sweet feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book.

Possible trigger for anyone currently fighting cancer or closely related to a breast cancer patient. The book is low angst and the experience is gently handled, but the subject matter is present.

Excerpt:

Hunter used to tell me how cute my cluelessness was, but I never understood how truly out of it I had been until recently. Simply living at the cheap motel was eating up my money at an alarming

rate, especially when I had a real need to eat every day and drove a gas-burning car.

Simply thinking about it had me clenching my fists. I wasn’t even meant to still be alive, dammit. And yes, breathing was preferable, but I wasn’t supposed to have to worry about finances.

All the money I’d won, and now I was afraid to tip the maids when they brought toilet paper and freshened the room because I might need it to buy a greasy burger from the value menu in another week or two.

“I beg your pardon, Derek. I’m sensing a lot of anger in your demeanor. Would you like to talk about your feelings for a few minutes?” Ted’s voice startled me, nearly making me jump.

You could call me an asswipe because you wouldn’t be wrong, but my first thought was maybe if I talked, then Ted would stop. For a few blissful seconds, the monotone would end. For that thought alone, I wanted to slap myself.

Chagrined and blushing, I nodded. “You know what, Ted? You’re right. I think I am angry. I should warn you, though. My self-talk is so bitchy I really can’t even with my own damn self, so maybe it’s best I don’t share?”

Ted shocked me by laughing. Actually fucking laughing. “Derek, anger is a healthy emotion, part of the grieving process I was discussing with you. In a couple weeks, you’ll be finished with your cancer treatments, won’t you? This is when real-world problems and emotions start taking over again as the fear of dying recedes. But part of your recovery is whole body, and that means your mind. You have to deal with your feelings, Derek, if you want to be completely healed.”

He was so encouraging, I wanted to sink into the floor and bury myself on the spot. Seriously, could I have been a bigger jerk?

“You might be right, Ted. But how will talking about my anger help my other problems? Problems I was apparently too clueless to even see coming in time to make wiser decisions. My ex-boyfriend was right. I might be cute and have a great personality, but I’m really not equipped to manage my own life.”

“I feel like your ex-boyfriend might have had good intentions, but he was wrong. You mentioned having a bachelor’s degree? Unless somebody earned it for you, its existence alone proves you’re capable of being educated. If you don’t know how to manage your life, maybe you were never taught?”

Wow. His statement was… something to consider. “I mean, I definitely did the work. But my grandmother paid for my education. I never had to get a job. She wanted me to have the full college experience and not have to worry about anything. And growing up, the household staff took care of my needs. Any decisions were handled by my father.”

“And how did your upbringing make you feel, Derek?”

How did I feel? What kind of question was he asking?

“I don’t know, Ted. I will have to think about what I feel, I suppose. If you’re asking if my upbringing is what I’m angry about, I don’t know. Maybe? Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I’d rather break something then talk about this more.”

Ted’s eyes lit up. He sat forward, rubbing his palms together with a surprisingly normal grin. “Then you should. Take something you don’t care about or an item with negative memories and destroy it. Smash it, break it, burn it—do whatever it takes. I’ll be interested to know if you feel better after it’s gone.”

Don’t ask him, don’t go there, don’t you do it, Derek. No. Hard, unequivocal no. Annnd on my next breath, I found myself doing it, opening my mouth, and flapping my yap, and yes—arranging a follow-up visit.

It was patently obvious I not only had problems saying no, but I was also a martyr. There was no other explanation why I would voluntarily put myself through another grueling session with Monotone Ted.

Although he had made a good suggestion, and I had to admit the man deserved to hear the story later after I purged my anger in an epic way. First, I needed to figure out what I would destroy.

About the Author

As an avid reader and big romance fan myself, I love sharing the stories of the different people who live in my imagination. My stories are filled with humor, a few tears, and the underlying message to not give up hope, even in the darkest of times, because life can change on a dime when you least expect it. This theme comes from a lifetime of lessons learned on my own hard journey through the pains of poverty, the loss of more loved ones than I’d care to count, and the struggles of living through chronic illnesses. Life can be hard, but it can also be good! Through it all I’ve found that love, laughter, and family can make all the difference, and that’s what I try to bring to every tale I tell.

I’m a happily married mom with one snarky teenage boy, and three grown “kids of my heart.” I’m more widely known for my mpreg writings as Susi Hawke; this new name is a departure from that. Whether written by Susan or Susi, the books are filled with that all-important love, laughter, and family I mentioned; the only difference is that this name has no male pregnancy. I look forward to sharing my stories with you, and to bringing more romance and laughter into this world that needs it so very badly.

Blurb:
Betraying the most powerful man in New York wasn’t something I ever envisioned when I first started playing games with Winston Constantine. But he’s engaged in far more dangerous games than ours, and his enemies are out for blood.

Winston has my heart, the Morellis have incriminating photos, and I’m left with nothing except three stepbrothers who want to hurt me and a future in doubt. I knew Winston wouldn’t be my prince charming, but that didn’t stop me from falling for him.

After all, the slippers fit, and I let myself believe I’d be dancing with Winston forever.

Until too much truth comes to light.

Until I realize instead of ruling the board, I was just a pawn.

In the end, I have only one question. When his game with me is over, will I be able to pretend as if the glass slipper wasn’t a perfect fit?

Renee Rose & Lee Savino-Alpha’s Moon

Before I get started on today’s book, I want to say that I will never put a link on how to read X Book free online. I may provide links to free book giveaways, but never how to read free online. That’s pirating, and I don’t support it.

***********************************************************

OK, now that I’ve had to say that, let’s talk about Renee and Lee’s new book. Alpha’s Moon is the first book in a new series, but this is a continuation of the shifter world they’ve been writing for the past 3 years. We’re based in Taos instead of Arizona, but, other than that, everything is the same.

So, we start with Sadie the Kindergarden Teacher. Her dad is on the city council. Her ex is a huge cheater and keeps trying to get her back. And it’s Whine Wednesday. It’s the day that she and all her girls get together, have wine, and whine. They are out having fun when the 4 of them see some huge guys with wolf tattoos getting off their motorcycles. One of the guys seems to stare at her, and she can’t pull her eyes away from him. Then, her ex calls, tells her that he knows where she is, and he’s waiting by the rideshare pickup stand to take her home. That’s when Sadie is like nope, and accidentally bumps into the hot biker and asks him for a favor. She wants him to pretend that they are dating to her ex, so he’ll live her alone.

Now, let’s talk about Deke. He and his 3 buddies are shifters, all wolves. They used to be Special Ops in the Army, but now all of them have left. They still do the same basic work, but now it’s on a more confidential, sneaky manner. The guys also do some security work. But, Deke has problems. He’s about >< away from going feral. He wants to fight. All the time. And to the death. The whole team is close to the edge, but Deke is definitely the worst. So, he’s been banned from hanging around humans. Then, he smells candy, and realizes that it comes from a sweet woman asking for his help.

A couple of weeks later, Sadie needs a plus one to a wedding, and she’s hoping that Deke will be her pretend boyfriend for the weekend, especially since her ex is going to be there. Despire what his Alpha says, Deke says that he’s going to go with her.

I liked Sadie at the beginning. I thought that she was a sweet person. And she is. But as the book went on, I liked her more and more. We really got to see a lot from her throughout the book, and I really enjoyed that. We don’t always get to see that kind of evolution in the heroine of the book. I really like watching her figure out who she is.

Poor Deke. He was always a good man, but he got so far into his head and was so convinced that he was terrible, that it turned into that. I think that his whole team needs a lot of help, and they need to see a psychiatrist for PTSD, because they all have got it. He has a really strong protective streak and a really good heart. I think that Sadie is going to be so fantastic for him.

I think that Adele knows a lot more than she is saying. I just get a little inkling about that.

I really dislike Sadie’s dad. Ugh.

OK, that’s all for this one, go check it out!

K Webster-Bond Deeper Than Blood

This story first appeared in the anthology E.V.I.E. Now that K has the rights back, she has put out Bond Deeper Than Blood on its own. So, if you didn’t get a chance to buy E.V.I.E. when it was available, you can now read this one.

When Calista was 5, she had a mother, a baby brother, and a stepfather she adored. In general, life was OK. Laurent, a musician, was trying to teach her to hear the music all around her. But instead of hearing the music all around them, they hear screams. Laurent tells Calista to get into a truck and locks her into it, because he knows what’s causing the screams. The next thing Calista knows, she hears vampires killing her mother and baby brother, and turning Laurent into a vampire, and just leaving him there to try to get her out of the chest.

Now, years later, Calista is a hunter. She’s out to kill vamps and other creatures that go bump in the night. Her overall goal is to find the twisted twins that killed her family and find Laurent so that she can kill him and give him mercy.

On the night that she finds the creepy evil twins and Laurent, things happen, and all of a sudden she has to handle a whole new world and all of her expectations and plans change.

I thought that Calista was really impressive. She has overcome a whole lot, and she’s still out there kicking ass and chewing bubble gum, and she’s all out of bubble gum. She has spent a lot of time working hard on her goal, and she’s going to do what she can to do it. That determination helps her, a lot. I think that it also hurts her some. Well, maybe. I think that she’s very focused on certain things and things outside that tend to fall by the wayside. I do like her, and I’d really like to see more of her in the future, because I think that there are going to be some really interesting things in her future and in the future of her particular world.

This is a short one, but the book is pretty short. Nothing under the picture here either. Go check it out! Happy reading!

Cari Silverwood-Isak and Red

Cari is back to her Mesmer world, and she hasn’t missed a step when it comes to that world. Isak and Red is dark, twisted, kinky af, and pretty much everything I really wanted to have. While there are several Mesmer books, this one is a direct sequel to Used.

For those who don’t remember what the Mesmers are or who aren’t familiar with the world, here’s a quick catch up. The Mesmers are always men. They have a thing in their brain that lets them control women. And I mean, completely control women. They can also wipe the memories of women. And, predictably, they are all pretty much fucked up AF. Some of the stuff these guys do is dark, disturbing, twisted, and kinky.

In this book, we have Isak and Red. He’s the Mesmer, and she’s the woman that he’s fascinated with and has controlled for years now. He’s done all kinds of things to her and to other women over the years, and now, he’s trying to figure out what to do next. He’s actually, if you can believe it, a little bored. He’s really done everything possible, twice. But then, some bad guys show up, and they want to figure out how Isak does what he does, and they have no problems hurting him or Red to find out how.

Isak and Red manage to get away, and Isak wants to try something new. He wants Red to teach him how to be human again. Which, you know, is an interesting choice. The thing is, he’s telling Red that he wants to be more human, but he’s telling himself that he doesn’t.

Oh man, there are so many things I want to say about this, because I am left with so many questions and thoughts after having read it, but if I talk about the things that I want to, then I’m going to spoil every damn thing. And I do mean every.damn.thing.

So, let’s just say that these guys are living in my head, and I have woken up a couple of times in the night wondering about the ending since I read it. I wonder how much anyone knows about what has happened or what their life is like now. It is definitely one of those stories that is going to live in my head for a while, and I will probably randomly wonder about my questions for years.

I would love to see more about Isak and Red, but I think that we are probably done with their story. I don’t know that Cari could do anything more with them, really, not without completely messing up who they are now, and I’m not entirely sure that I want them to be messed up, you know?

OK, nothing under the picture. Go check it out! Happy reading!

Leann Ryans-Owned

This is another Omegaverse story by Leann. Owned is the 3rd book in the Omega Market books. This is the series where omegas are collected at a central collection center, and then they are auctioned off to the highest bidding alpha. This is a more scifi series, with alphas and omegas coming from all kinds of worlds and all kinds of species. In this case, we are on an alien planet, with a human omega and an alpha of unknown species.

We start with a young Lena. She and her parents have moved to a new planet. Her father is a very, very ambitious man, and he has goals. Goals in which she is very involved. Right now, she’s just barely started going from child to teen. She’s at a dinner with her parents and her father’s new boss and his family. He has an alpha son named Ivar who there are obviously plans about when it comes to Lena. Her father keeps telling his boss that there are ways around the collection center. Ivar tells Lena that one day, she will be his mate. She’s not all that excited. She’s not the only one.

Several years later, and Lena is turning 20 and is about to go to the collection center. Of course, everyone knows that it’s only a nod to the rules because somehow her father and Ivar have figured out a way that Ivar will win her auction. So, she heads to the center with just the bare minimum of what she needs because everything else can just be sent to Ivar’s house.

But what no one knows, except for, well, himself, is that Remi is bound and determined that Ivar is not going to win, because Lena is his. And he knows how the fix is working, and he’s going to fuck it up. He wants Lena, and he’s going to get her. It helps that he’s now a partner with Ivar’s father and the boss of Lena’s father. Remi also has friends in places none of those men do, and he has information. He hoards information and then uses it to his advantage.

So, Ivar is a creepy little fuck. Lena doesn’t like him, and frankly, I don’t blame her. Like I said, he’s a creepy fuck. Her dad isn’t any better, only he’s a creepy big fuck.

I like Lena. She has tried so hard to do everything that she is supposed to do. She really is a good girl, and one who has been under so much pressure her entire life. Her father has never really seen her as a person ever since she presented as an omega. She’s really spent her life being a bargaining chip to her father, and he has no problem trying to cash in on her. I think that she is just such a sweet and lovely person. She’s really open and she just wants to be loved.

Remi is one of my favorite kinds of heroes. He’s devious, sneaky, tricky, and he is bound and fucking determined to get what he wants, when he wants it, and he will fuck over anyone who tries to get in his way. I really like him. Within his own personal framework and the framework of the world that he lives in, he’s a good man, and one that I wouldn’t mind knowing, because if he’s on your side, he’s on your side.

I can’t wait for the next book!

cityscape, Tokyo

I have to say that Lena’s mom fascinates me. I don’t know how much she knew and how much she didn’t. I’d like to think that she has some insider knowledge that she’s been using to help things out. I don’t know though.

OK, that’s all for this one. Go check it out! Happy reading!

HOSTED BY:

Renee Rose-The Fixer

This is the second book in Renee’s Chicago Bratva books. We first met these guys, or at least Maxim’s boss, in last year’s Black Light Roulette book, and then he ended up with his own book. Now, we have Maxim and Sasha in The Fixer, and we still get some mentions of Black Light, which is perfect, since this year’s Roulette just dropped. Anyway, let’s talk about Maxim and Sasha.

So, Sasha’s dad is a high head honcho in the Moscow Bratva. He used to be Maxim’s boss, but after a lie that Sasha told, he got sent to Chciago. Now, it’s 7 years later, and her dad is dying. He never married her mother, so now that he’s dying, he’s making plans for Sasha and her mother, and oh, all his money. The mother goes to the second in command. Sasha? Well, she’s to marry Maxim who will have control of all her millions of dollars for all her new oil fields. And when I say marry, I mean they dragged in the city clerk, the old man handed Maxim a ring to give Sasha, and they sign on the dotted line, and then pops kicks the bucket.

Sasha is not happy. She knows that Maxim hates her, how could he not, after all, she told a lie about him and got him sent away. And that doesn’t even count the fact that she quite literally showed up naked in his bed years ago and he walked away. It’s obvious he doesn’t like her or want her. So, Sasha is determined that she will just get him to leave her in Moscow and just give heer money to live on.

Now Maxim, he’s perfectly happy living in Chicago. He likes his boss, he likes his brothers, and he likes the freedome that being in the US gives him. So, he’s terribly surprised when he comes to Moscow to find out that he’s going to marry Sasha. This is definitely an interesting turn up because he didn’t think that this would happen, but now, several years after he kicked a young Sasha out of his bed and then got kicked out of Moscow, he now gets to have a grownup Sasha as his wife. She may come with gazillions of dollars, but that isn’t anywhere near the draw that she is.

I like Sasha. I think that she has a lot of fire and spark. I love that she literally makes Maxim chase her, but it seems like it’s a game that they both end up liking. She’s smart and clever and she’s brave and she’s not afraid to make herself known. I think that she’s been raised to use her body and looks as a weapon and she does that well, but I don’t think it would work nearly as well without the brains and boldness that she keeps under wraps. She also has a really loving heart. When she lets down her guard, she makes friends easily, and it’s easy to see why.

Maxim is a good man. That doesn’t mean that he’s on the side of the law or that he doesn’t do things that break the law, because he’s a member of the Russian Mafiya, so he totally does do those things. But, he’s good and honorable within his standards and morals. He does have a blind spot when it comes to women, but he’s still a good man.

I hate Sasha’s mother. Bitch.

OK, that’s all for this one. Go check it out! Happy reading!
