Measha Stone-Hound

This is the 4th book in Measha’s Ever After series. Each of these books is roughly inspired by a fairy tale of some sort. I’m not 100% sure which one Hound is based on, but we have a Foxx as a main character, so you can figure it out yourself.

Keagan Foxx has an impressive skill set. She used that skill set to get into a catalog party at Ash Titon’s Annex, and managed to trick a man into taking her home, and she eventually stole $200K from him. The guy came to Ash and threatened to come after him to get the money back. Ash’s cousin, Jackson, was there to try to buy into the Annex, and when he sees the pic of the offending woman, he tells Ash that he’ll track her down.

Kegan had a very good reason to do what she did. Her foster mother, the only woman she’s ever seen as a mother, died a few years ago, and she’s trying to find out what happened, and she thinks that there may be a small, teeny, tiny chance that she didn’t die. The money Keagan stole went to try and fund her search. She’s moved on to the next mark on her list when Jackson finds her and takes her to his house.

Jackson has plans for Kegan. They had been friendly before, but no strings attached. Now, he plans on getting the money back from her and finding out what’s going on with her. And he doesn’t care what he has to do to meet his goal.

Kegan is smart and very talented, but I think that she is naive, at least to some extent. Yeah, she knows that she’s dealing with powerful men who have few, if any, scruples, but she still seems to think that certain things won’t affect her. I found that to be a really interesting POV on her point. I would’ve been much more cynical than her, and I don’t even have her experience in dealing with the type of men, or sharks more like, that she’s been swimming around with. I think that she’s done well, most of the time, but it only takes one slip, you know?

I think that Jackson is a really good man, especially considering the fact that his business skirts some legal lines. He really wants to make something of himself, and he wants to try to be family-ish with his cousins, which is difficult with family history, but they are making it work.

Normally I would never advocate for any kind of fox hunt, but the one in here is pretty interesting.

The 3Ms, which is how their combined newsletter comes out, are Maddie Taylor, Morganna Williams, and Meredith O’Reilly. They all write separately as well, but they tend to release anthologies with just the 3 of them. This is important, because Absolutely Alpha is a box set that contains 3 of their anthologies and 14 new stories. Altogether, you are getting 48 short stories. With the added 14, it’s like you are getting 4 books altogether. The 3 books that make up this set are Sweetly Sinful, Wonderfully Wicked, and Deliciously Decadent. Follow the links to see my re. The new stories are spread out throughout the entire set, and are marked as new content on the title page of each story.

Now, when it comes to reviewing, 48 is a lot to review. Hell, 14 is a lot to review. When it comes to anthologies, I personally don’t like to leave a review of every story unless it’s 8 or under, just because I think that it’s a lot of review to read, and if I don’t want to read it, I really don’t want to write it, and I figure that you don’t want to read it either. Instead, what I generally do is to pick out some of my favorites and talk about that those. That’s what I’m going to do here. I’m going to review my favorite story by each of these ladies, from the new content.

Now, I’ve often said that one of my favorite things about anthologies like this is that they are quick and easy to read, and they are. They also give you a nice taste of a new author. Some anthologies are themed, like all the stories are Daddy stories, or aliens, or whatever. That’s not the case here. The stories run the gamut from historical, to contemporary, to futuristic sci-fi aliens. So, no matter what you like, you can find something here.

Isabella’s Punishment

This is a Meredith story. It’s very contemporary since it is set against quarantine and Covid. While those things are mentioned, it’s more about how Isabella and her husband and Daddy, Stephen are handling the quarantine and the uncertainty that we’ve all been dealing with. One of the things that I liked about this one is that it shows the absolute caring in between Isabella and Stephen. Yeah, he punishes her for breaking the rules, but the majority of the story is about what comes after. And it’s not just the cuddling, it’s also the talking. It’s a really sweet story.

Wild Thing

This is a Morganna story. This one is a historical, and it gave me a real Scarlet Letter feel, especially since it takes place in a puritanical village setting, and because it has a woman, Constance, and her illegitmate daughter, Pearl. I really liked the Scarlet Letter when I read it back in the day, because I loved the whole subversion of turning the A into something beautiful. Anyway, that’s not what happens in this one. In this once, Constance and her daughter live in the woods, near a Native American village, and Pearl grows up with their kids and runs wild. The thing that I liked about this one is the Constance never tried to make Pearl into what everyone else demanded or made her fit into society’s rules.

Match Night

This is one of Maddie’s stories. It’s a futuristic, post apocalyptic kind of thing. Karissa managed to survive the apocalypse by sheltering under her high school, but now, years later, she hears an alarm and is told to run to follow some lights and run to a pop-up shelter before they close the doors. When she gets there, she learns a whole lot more than she expected to. I like this one because of how careful Xain is when he finds out how little Karissa knows about what’s going on.

Anyway, if you want some great short stories, this is definitely the collection for you.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

The 25th is a huge day for me at work. Yes, I work from home, and yes, I’m a freelancer, but the company I contract with has a lot of keywords today, which means a lot of writing for me. So, I’m going to be busy writing about water well installation and septic tank services today. If I’m lucky, they’ll have keyword for adult toys.

Eva Charles-Decadent

Before we move on to the book part of today’s blog, I do just want to gush a little over the fact that I got my car today. The nice transport man from Carvana stopped his car transporter at the top of my tiny country road, and then drove it down to my house. And then right past my house. But, he came back, and I remember how to drive a stick shift, even after 18 years.

But, enough of that, let’s talk books. Decadent is the fourth and probably last of the Devil’s Due books by Eva Charles. They are dark romances, heavy on the thriller/suspense, and loads of kink. They do deal with a lot of politics, especially the firsts 2 books, but that’s the world they are set in, so there’s that. There is less politics in this one and what is there is more foreign than domestic. It could be read as a standalone, since the Gray and Delilah’s story is complete in and of itself, well mostly, but there are spoilers for the first 3 books. Also, if you read the first books, you will have a better grasp on who everyone is and how they all fit together.

Delilah is a former CIA operative. She was trained to act undercover, but then her cover got blown in a big way, in front of a Congressional hearing kind of big. So, now she works for Smith, as part of his security firm. She used to work undercover at Wildflower, which is Gray’s club/sex club, but that got blown too. But she and Gray have been dancing around each other for a while now. But nothing has really co me of it. Until, that is, the day that Gray catches her doing something she probably shouldn’ta ought’a done, and extorts her to join a mission that he has. She’s the perfect person for it, so Gray wants her to do it. And, well, he just wants her in general.

Gray lives with a lot of regrets and a lot of guilt. He also has a whole lot of secrets. One of those secrets is that he works for the FBI in a super sekrit department, doing super sekrit things. For that department, he has a mission that is going to be dangerous, and he needs a beautiful woman who can be his arm candy but who can also hold her own. So, he of course thinks of Delilah. He does what he has to so that he can get her on his team, even though there were other ways that he could’ve gone about it, but eventually, she agrees to help him on his mission.

Gray is really confusing to me throughout the first parts of the book. He comes off as an asshole, with bits of compassion and caring coming through. Or, maybe it’s the other way around. I’m not even sure that Gray could tell on his own. Like I said, confusing. I think that he’s a good man, even when he has done some bad things, and he really has done some not good things. But, he does them from a place of honor and a place where he’s a good man who has to do things that he might not like. If that makes sense. It does to me. He really had to hide his emotions, and I think that he has hidden them from himself at times. It takes him some time to figure that out, I think.

I really like Delilah. I think that she has come really far from where she started out. But, I think that some of that has dug into her brain and doesn’t want to let go. Let’s just say that her mother has a lot to answer for. And so does her dead husband. But Delilah works really hard to stand on her own two feet. She’s strong, a fighter, talented, and smart. And she’s an asset to any team that she’s on, which is a part of why Gray wants her on his team. I think, mostly, that’s a convenient excuse for Gray, really. I think that he came up with this justification to get to her in a way that seemed to give him some emotional distance from the fact that he really just wants her as a woman. If she is part of his team, then they don’t have a real relationship, and he’s safe from her. Like I said, convenient excuse.

That prince. Ugh. He’s just scummy.

Claire Marta-The Dove and The Darkness

This is the 2nd Claire Marta book of this week, as promised. The Dove and the Darkness is the 5th book in her Ceasefire series, and it covers Cassandra’s story. You have to read these in order, you can’t just jump into a book in the middle of the series and get it. There’s a whole lot going on, and you need the background to understand why Cassandra did the things that she did and why she has ended up where she is.

For those who aren’t familiar with Ceasefire, it’s a lot to try to explain. It’s a PNR. It primarily deals with Hell and various Hell and underworld dimensions. Lucifer is a main character in the first books, and is a supporting character in all the other books, including this one. So, Cassandra is an Oracle, who was raised in Hell from the time she was 6, as Lucifer’s foster daughter and her 1/2 sister is Mavi, who is Lucifer’s consort. It’s complicated.

Cassandra made some choices based on some information she got from her visions, and, well, it didn’t necessarily go well for her. When she wakes up somewhere she isn’t familiar with, she starts to worry. That’s when she finds out that she’s been taken from where she was and is now in a prison, waiting to be trained so that she can be given to the person who has bought her. And her training isn’t going to be how to sit and embroider a pretty picture. Nope, she’s going to learn to do all the sexual things out there, and if she doesn’t do it right, bad things are going to happen.

That’s where Master Soren comes into play. He’s there to train Cassandra. He’s all very Dom-ly. He is nominally under the Warden, but you get the idea that there is a lot more going on there than we are seeing. The Warden, who is a nasty ass bitch, really likes him, because he will totally Top her when she wants him to. Soren is basically in charge of the training, which is what brings Cassandra to his attention. He’s been doing this for a very long time, so he knows what he’s doing. That includes isolating her in a room by herself and giving her no other contact for days, other than sliding food in under a grate. When he comes to get her again, she’s so grateful to see him, because she gets to see someone. When Cassandra is good, she gets orgasms. When she’s bad, she gets punished. Soren really enjoys it. Cassandra definitely enjoys it, at least parts of it. There are other things that she likes about the time she spends with him.

I like Cassandra. I think that she is a lot stronger than anyone really gives her credit for. I mean, she does have all these visions, and if she’s not careful, they do overwhelm her. I mean, they do get overwhelming enough that she has hurt herself to help control everything, but she’s still dealt with these things all her life. Being raised by a demon and Lucifer, she has been really protected from a lot, but that doesn’t mean that she hasn’t had terrible things happen to her anyway. And she survived that. In this case, even as Soren is breaking her down and she is getting in deeper with him, she is still trying to be herself, and she is still fighting. I have a lot of respect for that, and I think that it’s going to do her a lot of good in the future.

Interestingly enough, I feel like I don’t have as good a grasp on Soren as I could. I think I like what we’ve seen of him, but there’s just a lot hidden when it comes to him. Even being in his head at times doesn’t necessarily give us a lot to him. But, like I said, I think that I like what we know about him. I can’t wait for the next book, to see more about him.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize who Soren is, where they are, and who his brother is. I wanted to dope slap myself when I got there, because duh.
