Jane Henry-Lachlan

Lachlan is the latest entry in Jane’s Irish mob series. This one crosses the ocean a little bit, so we aren’t only in Ireland, but we’re also in Boston for part of the action. Boston, especially South Boston, has a huge Irish population, and a lot of Irish mob history, so it makes sense to cross the ocean a little bit. We’re also 5 years in the future from the last book, so there is just more family to love.

Fiona has just this very minute turned 18. She’s been looking forward to turning 18, because hopefully that means the man she has loved for years will actually come to her. She’s been waiting for Lachlan for what seems like forever, but she hasn’t been an adult until now. So, she goes to her big surprise party, which probably wasn’t all that big of a surprise, considering, and while she enjoys it, she keeps looking around to see if she can find Lachlan. When she finally finds him, she goes over to talk to him, and he gives her a present that he tells her to open in private. When she gets a minute, she discovers it’s a locket with a picture of teenaged her in it, and a note that says to see herself as he sees her, love Lachlan.

After her party, she heads out with friends, and they end up going to the Craic (pronounced crack and basically means fun), the local bar and BDSM club. While she’s there, she sees Lachlan with another woman in his arms, kissing her. So, she rushes home and tells Nolan and Sheena that she’s going to go to school in Boston.

Lachlan has spent years working for the Clan. He’s well trusted, and respected. He’s been doing international jobs for Keenan and the Clan, but he managed to be home for Fiona’s birthday. He gives her his present, and then heads out with some of the men to the Craic to get a drink. They talk him into going to the back, where the club is, and some woman literally throws herself on him. Just as he gets rid of her, he looks and thinks that he sees Fiona, but surely it’s not her.

I think Fiona is going to be most favorite heroine of the series, at least thus far. And after Maeve, but Maeve doesn’t really count, since she’s a secondary in all the books, not the primary. But Fiona is just fiesty, and spirited, and sassy. I think that she might get more up close and personal with Clan business than most of the other heroines do, and she manages to accept it and move on. Of course, I think it helps that she’s kind of a new generation of women to marry into the Clan. She’s seen Maeve, her sister, and all these women that she respects as wives to these men, so she may have a little better feel for it. Or maybe I’m just talking out my arse. It’s totally possible either way.

Lachlan, like all the other heroes in this series, is a good man who follows a strict moral code. It’s not my code or your code, but it’s his code, or rather that of the brotherhood, and he adheres to it. Which makes him a good man. He’s bossy and dominant, but Fiona tends to like that, so it works. I think that he’ll keep her grounded, but he won’t take away her fire and spirit, and oh my, does she have a whole lot of that.

OK, with the attacks on the Clan, I have to wonder if what happened to Sheena is part of the attack. I hope not, but Jane never really says.

That’s all for today. Go check it out. Happy reading!

Susi Hawke-The Reluctant Alpha

Susi is one of my favorite MM omegaverse authors. She writes shifter and non-shifter books, her Hollydale books are fucking hilarious, especially anything with Tom, and under Susan Hawke, writes some great contemporary MM fiction. Today, we have The Reluctant Alpha, which is the first book in a new shifter omegaverse series, and I really can’t wait for the rest of the series.

So, we get straight down to business here. Matthias and his friends are in a bar when Matt gets a phone call. It’s his old friend Jared, and Jared has a proposition for him. He tells Matt that he needs to come back to his family pack, take over, and oh yeah, save an omega from sure and certain death. Jared is an alpha wolf, and his besties are 4 other alpha wolves, who have all left their home pack for one reason or another. In this world, no one thinks that a pack can have more than an alpha and an heir, but these guys have proved that’s not true. The 5 of them have created a motorcycle club called West Coast Wolves, and among other things, they try to help out those in need. Which means that when Jared calls and says that his family pack is now leaderless and that the old alpha’s pregnant omega mate is now dying, Matt has to do something. So, off he goes to the town he left behind 10 years ago, to try to pull his pack together.

Elisha is an omega who was stolen away from his old pack by an alpha named Horace. He forced a bond on Elisha, and was basically a complete asshole. Then, after 6 months of trying to negotiate with Horace, Elisha’s father came and challenged him. Horace is now dead, and Elisha’s father left him for dead, because Elisha no longer fits into his father’s plans, so who cares if he is going to spend 3 months dying in pain. Matthias walks into Elisha’s room and discovers that not only is Elisha about to become his mate, but that they are true mates, which works out really well.

Susi says that this one is a little darker than some of her others, but I don’t think it is all that dark. I mean, I don’t think it is all that dark by anyone’s standards, let alone my “I read pitch black” standards. There are a couple of moments that are intense, and more intense than you might see in most of Susi’s books, but overall, it is very Susi. Which is a good thing. You get strong characters, both alphas and omegas, a lot of love, and some humor. And those things are very much alive in this book.

Elisha is really just a sweet and loving guy. He’s also ruthlessly practical, I think. He has no problem with seeing what needs to be done and doing it. He has his fingers on what’s going on in the pack, and he loves the pack. He does everything he can to make the pack better. I think that Matt will really depend on Elisha and his good ideas.

Matt is a good guy. He has some ideas that are contrary to the way current society runs, but they make his path to work better. Like, he won’t keep Elisha or other omegas as second class citisens, but tells everyone that Elisha is his partner and equal. Not only tells them, but actually treats him accordingly.

Jared was a nice little addition, as were the other 4 alphas, who we’ll be seeing more of in upcoming books.

No spoilers today. It’s a quick, easy read, and one that I really enjoyed. So, go check it out! If you’ve wanted to try out MM shifter omegaverse, I’d definitely sugget this, and if you want to try MM omegaverse, check out Susi’s Men of Hollydale books. Happy reading!

West Coast Wolves, Book One

“As much as I felt bad for this Elisha person—God, my heart was breaking for the young man and all he’d been through—I was also angry. I’d left that pack in my rearview ten years ago for a good reason.”

Matthias Longclaw is happy living his life on the back of his beloved Harley with his five best friends and brothers-in-arms at his side. The West Coast Wolves are a rare pack of alphas, made up of unwanted orphans and second-born sons. The packs they were born to may not have wanted them, but they’ve built a solid family of their own. They help where they can, doing random acts of kindness and expecting nothing in return, just helping to build a world they want to live in.

Then Matt gets a call from an old childhood buddy. He’s being called back—begged to return—to reclaim his birthright and save someone in the process. The problem is… to do it, he will have to take a mate. And if he refuses? The omega will die.

Torn between his duty to help others and his resentment of his old pack, Matt never expects for Elisha Whitetail to tilt his world and change everything. Can Matt and Elisha rebuild a broken pack while tending to a new love and a growing family while dealing with outside threats from neighboring packs?

They’re wolves. Strong, proud, and willing to do what it takes when their community needs them… whatever it takes.

Special Release Excerpt:

Jared wasn’t offended, or maybe he was more focused on the outcome than on what was said getting there. “Matty, Elisha didn’t ask to be your uncle’s mate. When he was taken and forcibly claimed, he was barely of age. Think about it like this—your uncle was worse than our old alpha, so what kind of a life do you think he’s had here? And now he’s pregnant and was left to die by his own father? While I know most alphas wouldn’t care about some omega and his pup, I believe you would. Do you, old friend? Or have you changed so radically in the years since you’ve gone?”

Dammit. The guy was good at negotiating—and emotional blackmail—I’d give him some credit. Not only had he called me Matty, but he had to tack on ‘old friend.’ Tucker, standing close enough to easily hear both halves of the conversation, shook his head. I didn’t know whether he was telling me to stand my ground or reminding me of our code.

Fuck me, I don’t have a choice. I have to do this, no matter how much it kills me. Nevertheless, I tried one more time to beg off.

“You ask too much, Jared. This is unfair. You want me to come back and fight to retake the pack from Monty—since we both know he won’t hand it over—and you are asking me to forcibly claim a delirious omega who was already abused by my uncle. And then you want me to accept the responsibility of his pup, too. Is that what you’re saying? Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.”

Jared spoke in a rush, relief evident in his voice when he realized there was a chance I would give in. “There’s just no other way, Matty. Newberry Springs invaded this morning. Half of our Delta soldiers were killed, and the others were either taken or left to die. Isaac—our current epsilon healer—saved the ones he could. I have all the wounded here, along with the four gammas from our ruling council.”

He paused barely long enough to take a breath. “We’ve sequestered ourselves in the alpha mansion. Monty and his men left a few hours ago with every able man and boy of working age. They took them back to Newberry Springs, leaving women and children and the elderly or physically challenged men behind. About thirty-one pack members remain, aside from the council and the injured deltas. Matty, I’m turning to you because I don’t know what else to do. I can’t protect them and the alpha mate at the same time. And I certainly can’t claim him. I need help from a real alpha who I can trust to save both Elisha and our pack.”

When I heard Monty had left his son behind, I knew immediately I would do as Jared asked. I still had a few questions, though.

“Jared, I remember Monty Whitetail as being a hardass. But surely he didn’t mean to basically murder his own son? Especially when he’s pregnant? He knows about the pup, doesn’t he? Exactly how long has my uncle had this omega there? I’ve calmed down, so I’m thinking our packs are no more than an hour apart. Why didn’t Monty save his son sooner? I mean, he has to have been there at least a few weeks, right? Detecting the pregnancy before then would’ve been impossible unless your healer stumbled over it during an examination or something.”

As if it broke his heart to say the words, Jared spoke solemnly. “Your uncle brought Elisha here over six months ago. His father had more than enough time to find and rescue him. The truth is, he’s been negotiating with Alpha Horace for a payout. When our Alpha didn’t meet his terms, Monty threw down the challenge. Understand this, Matthias. Monty doesn’t want Elisha back. He told me—and this is a direct quote—to let the mutt die. He said his only worth was as a bartering chip for a pact he’d been trying to make with an alpha in Arizona. Their deal fell through when Elisha was stolen, and Monty focused on getting some sort of payback from Alpha Horace. Now Monty has everything he wants and no reason to rescue someone he considers used goods.”

“Fuck! I have to do this, don’t I?” I was speaking more to myself than to Jared.

“We need you, Matty. We need you to save Elisha and to save our pack. We could’ve used your leadership for years. But now you’re our last hope. I know I’m asking a lot, but the pack we have now aren’t the same people who were here when you left. Most of our parents’ generation either moved along after Alpha Horace came into power or have died out. The ones here now are mostly a mix of new blood and the people we grew up with.

You might not have to kill Monty, you know. You could offer a ceremonial challenge, where whoever strikes first blood wins, and wrest control of the pack without any blood on your hands. But if you did have to kill him, Elisha wouldn’t blame you. And you’ll like Elisha, I mean it. He’s young, but he’s an old soul with a gentle sweetness about him. Oh, and he’s a great cook. A real homebody… but then, I’ve heard most omegas are pretty shy.”

“You don’t have to sell me on his qualities as a mate, Jared. Even if he was a complete asshole, I would still be willing to save his life. He’s the victim here, and I damned well know it.” Sighing, I pushed away from the pool table and paced back and forth. I didn’t want to do this but… shit. There was no other choice.

Considering everything Jared said, I felt better about the decision I was about to make, though I had to ramble through my thoughts. “I’d be within my rights whether I chose the ceremonial or traditional challenge. Either way, I would avenge my uncle’s death, as heinous as the idea sounds. And I would be asserting my rights on behalf of my new mate and his unborn child. If I’m the one who acts, the Supreme Council won’t have a reason to intervene. The Territory Chief will sign off on it without question. Dammit. I really was your only option.”

Jared spoke softly, his voice thick with emotion. “There is nobody else, old friend. But even if there were, you’re the most trustworthy alpha I’ve ever met. Being your pack beta would be my honor.” With a soft sigh, he paused for a second. “Matty, I hate to ask this of you, but we need you—Elisha needs you—and time grows short.”

“Give me an hour and a half to get there. And Jared? Thank you for giving a shit. But do me a favor? I don’t like the idea of the weaker pack members being left unguarded in town while you and the gammas are sequestered. Tell those gamma wolves to get off their asses and go get every leftover pack member. I want them behind the safety of those walls, and I want it done before I get there, or my first act as alpha will be finding some new gammas.”

Jared chuckled lightly. “There’s the alpha I remember. Hurry home, Matty. It’s been far too long.”

About the Author:

I’m a happily married mom of one snarky teenage boy, and three grown “kids of my heart.” As a reader and big romance fan myself, I love sharing the stories of the different people who live in my imagination. My stories are filled with humor, a few tears, and the underlying message to not give up hope, even in the darkest of times, because life can change on a dime when you least expect it. This theme comes from a lifetime of lessons learned on my own hard journey through the pains of poverty, the loss of more loved ones than I’d care to count, and the struggles of living through chronic illnesses. Life can be hard, but it can also be good! Through it all I’ve found that love, laughter, and family can make all the difference, and that’s what I try to bring to every tale I tell.

Taking a Break

Most of you probably don’t know that my car caught on fire with my husband and me in it on Monday. We’re both OK, but still a little shaken up. Right now, we’re in a limbo as to what is going to happen now, so things feel really up in the air. Insurance claims have been filed, that got filed that night, but we are waiting to see what they decide. Then comes the very complicated issue of getting a new car, complicated because of personal reasons and because of the Plague.

Because of this, I’m going to take a break for a couple of days to let my world settle back down and to regroup. I’ll be back on Sunday with a new shifter mpreg from Susi Hawke, with Jane Henry, Felicity Brandon, and other new books. Until then, here’s a picture of my poor burned up little green car. She was a good car.

If you want to keep up on what I’m reading, hit my goodreads link up, you can finding it on the side, over there. —–>

I couldn’t get closer, because the firefighters were worried that the fire might still be hiding somewhere inside the car.

Misty Walker-Birdie’s Biker

Misty has given us another RBMC book with Birdie’s Biker. This one takes place in Reno. And it’s almost all the Reno chapter, except for one brief appearance from the Tonopah chapter, who we have seen before.

So, we have Bridgette. She has just turned 18. Her daddy is rich, and she is definitely her daddy’s girl. She has friends, or more realistically, frenemies. They hang out with each other, but they constantly try to score off each other, and not in a fun way. She’s been raised to be pretty, and not much else. She doesn’t like it though. Bridgette just isn’t happy-ish. But she really doesn’t know what to do to change things. One night, she’s woken from her sleep by a noise. She isn’t sure what the noise is, so she goes to find out what’s going on. It turns out that there are some bad guys in her house. One of them has killed her bodyguard, and now they are in talking to her dad. She eavesdrops until she finds out that they might want to hurt her, then she runs into the backyard. She hides there until she hears a shot, then she runs and hides in a pool house with her dog. Eventually, she comes back into the house and discovers that her father has been shot, but he’s still bearly alive.

Then we have the Prez of the Reno chapter, Loki. His chapter takes on a lot of killings for hire. And Bridgette’s dad has a job for him. He doesn’t want Loki and the boys to kill someone, what he does want is for them to get something back that was stolen from him. And, oh yeah, watch his nubile 18 year old daughter too. Daddy will pay them more if they do that as well as get back the vial that was stolen from him, and they can kill whoever. Loki decides that he’ll take the whole job, but when he sees Bridgette, a switch is flipped in his head. All he sees is a spoiled rotten, entitled, little rich girl, and he wants to take her down a notch, so he does.

Now, here’s the think. Bridgette, AKA Birdie, is kind of a spoiled little rich girl. She’s never really had the opportunity or reason to become anything other than that. She is young. She has time to get past that. She’s also a lot stronger than people give her credit for, including, I suspect, herself. But she learns a lot about herself while Loki keeps her captive. And she does some real growing up in just a couple of days. Birdie had been kept very insulated, so even normal life would’ve been a huge shock to her system, let alone moving into an MC. I am impressed by Bridgette and her resilience and strength, and just the inner well of guts that she has.

Then we have Loki. He’s an asshole. He’s an asshole when he’s nice. He’s a bigger asshole when he’s not nice. He’s also very happy to be an asshole. There is some growth and change in him, but not a whole lot, really. I don’t particularly care for him most of the time. I don’t dislike him, I just don’t care for him. I don’t mind a character who is an asshole most of the time, but he goes out of his way to be an asshole, for really no reason sometimes.

I do like a lot of the brothers in the chapter, especially Roch. I wouldn’t mind seeing their stories.

No spoilers today. I will say this, it is very intense at times, and there are some pretty dark points to it. OK, go check it out. Happy reading!

Vegas is where good people go to sin. Reno is where the bad ones go.

Amidst the drugs, weapons, and trafficking, a murder-for-hire market has emerged. And my motorcycle club is right in the thick of it.

If you can pay, we have a million different ways to solve your problem. You want someone to vanish without a trace? The Great Basin Desert is almost two hundred thousand square miles of “nobody will ever find you.” You want to make a statement? We’ve been known to hang bodies from the Reno Arch.

If you’re paying, we’re killing. No witnesses, no evidence, and no questions asked.

That is until we’re hired to locate and kill a group threatening biological warfare by exposing our city to a deadly virus they stole. It’s the big payday we need. But in order to take the job, we have to also agree to protect the spoiled brat who saw everything.

Small. Frail. Innocent. Frightened. I made her my little birdie, but she always wants to fly away. Too bad for her I’ve clipped her wings and locked her in my cage.

They say free birds sing, and caged birds pray. Her cries sound the same to me.

*Birdie’s Biker is a dark romance in the second run of the Royal Bastards MC. It’s sexy as sin, thrilling, gritty, and dirty. If you love tortured heroes and a heroine who learns her strength in the most depraved way, then you’ll love Birdie’s Biker.

Sara Fields-His Majesty

We have a new book from Sara Fields with His Majesty. And she uses one of my favorite words in this book, defenestration. Way back in the day, I defenstrated a lot of people on the old chat services. So it was fun to see that word actually being used in a book, because you just don’t see it often.

Anyway, here’s our story. We have Isabella. She’s an American living in Rome as an exchange student. On one of her last nights in town, she’s supposed to hit the town with all her girls, but they don’t show, so she hits the town on her own. At a bar, a suave gentleman comes up to her, hits on her, and eventually takes her home. Things don’t work so well for Isabella when that happens, and the next thing she knows, she wakes up in a bed in a room that is not her own.

Mateo is the King of Savoy, a tiny, hidden kingdom in the Italian Alps. He has a huge amount of power and wealth, and pretty much the world is at his feet. He gets what he wants, and right now, what he wants is Isabella, and since he has her in his bedroom, he’s going to have her. Even if he has to spank her and bend her over the windowsill so that everyone can see him fuck her. Or may especially if he has to spank her and hang her over the windowsill so that everyone can see him fuck her.

Mateo is high-handed, stubborn, determined, and only listens to himself, so pretty much everything that a king who rules way behind the scenes would be. He has to be that way, so it’s a good thing that he is, right? The thing is that I don’t dislike him. Yeah, he’s hard and he’s hard on the people around him, but it sounds like his world can be very cut-throat, so you kinda have to be hard. He’s soft when he can be, but only in private. He makes decisions when it comes to Isabella that you might think he wouldn’t make, but he does, and it makes sense why he does the things that he does.

At first, I kind of thought that Isabella was somewhat entitled, but my opinion changed pretty quickly on her. I think that what I saw was entitled was just lonliness in that particular moment. She’s worked hard and she wants her friends, and I can understand that. I give her a lot of props for her actions in a tight spot. I cheered for her a lot, because yes.

OK, no spoilers here today. Go check it out! Happy reading!

Loki Renard & Jane Henry-Dirty Look

First of all, please forgive any weirdness that may show up in posts over the next few days. WordPress is rolling out a new editor, and I’m not used to it yet. I haven’t had the time to sit in play with it yet. Probably this weekend.

OK, now that’s been said, let’s talk about today’s book. Today we have Dirty Look, whch is another collab between Jane and Loki. Now, you know that I like both of these ladies, as they have shown up here before, and I’m totally down for a good collab.

So, let’s talk about the story, shall we? We start with Mia. She has left the family nest in Italy and is now in Boston, so that she can go to college. Huge change. She is as far away as she is because she wants to get away from her family and the Family. Her father is the big boss, and he has kept her in a protective shell her entire life, so going away to college in another country is a huge bit of independence for her, especially since she’s all alone. (Or so she thinks.) All of a sudden, she finds out that she’s not.

Enzo was specifically tasked to go to Boston and watch over Mia. He had failed his boss once before, and this is his chance to redeem himself. He’s been watching over Mia very carefully. Very, very, very carefully. When he sees a man in Mia’s apartment, he rushes over from his apartment across the street, breaks down her door, and throws the guy out. Then he and Mia get up close and personal. Which only gets worse when it turns out he’s her new prof.

I think that Enzo is very protective. Very protective. I think that he should’v or could’ve backed off a little bit. I get making sure that his boss’ daughter is safe, but she should get to make some mistakes so that she can learn. But, that probably wouldn’t have been as good a story, so, I guess I’ll take it, lol.

I think that Mia did go a smidge wild, but I can’t blame her too much. She’s never had the chance to make mistakes and screw up, and if this isn’t the time to do it, I don’t know when is. I think that she is a lot stronger than she has been given credit for.

brownstone houses in Boston

There is a fantastic line in the book when the boss asks Enzo why he has his daughter’s name in his naked mouth.

OK, that’s all I have to say about this one. Go check it out! Happy reading!
