Petra Knox-Make Me Real

Make Me Real is Petra’s addition to the Dirty Heros collection, and I have to say that it wrenched my heart around quite a bit. There is definitely some sadness going on in here, but if you don’t read through the sad, you can’t get to the happy. And Petra doesn’t just drown us in it, there are nice rhythms in the book, giving you plenty of time to catch your breath and get ready for what’s coming up.

So, we start with Pinn. He has to do a lot of bad things for his Pop. Right now, he’s supposed to track down a man named Pepper. He goes to a club called the Mesmer while he’s following Pepper, and all of a sudden, a beautiful woman starts to sing. Her name is Blue, and Pinn truly finds her fascinating. He’s so drawn to her that he stops paying attention to Pepper, who escapes. Pinn has to leave too, because he can’t get involved with her. Of course, it’s never that easy.

He has to keep searching for Pepper, or his Pop is going to do terrible things. Eventually, Pinn finds out where he’s staying, and he goes there. Of course, guess who is right there? Yeah, Blue. She’s staying in the same hotel. And you can only guess where it goes from there.

We don’t see Blue’s POV, so we can only guess at what she’s thinking and what she’s like. She seems to be a really sweet and loving person. She is willing to wait to see what Pinn is going to do, no matter what is going on in her life or her friends urge her to do. I think that means she has to be pretty strong, because it isn’t always easy to be the person who is standing, waiting, to see what is going to happen.

Pinn is really just tormented, I think. He knows what he wants, but he’s also basically been brainwashed to be the person that he is. It isn’t easy on him, and there’s a lot of conflict going on in his head, and it isn’t going to be much easier on him, ever, I think. He might have to do bad things, but I think, overall, that he’s a pretty good guy. He doesn’t really choose to do these things, I think.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the book, and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Pinn and Blue.
