Cari Silverwood-Cyn

Cari has finally released the last book in her Beast Horde series with Cyn. I was totally ready for this book, and I’m not sad for the wait, not like it was a horribly long wait. But this was definitely worth every single second that I had to wait for the ARC.

Now, before I get started, I want to remind people that there are likely to be spoilers in this review for the first two books because of the way that Cari wrote them. So, if you’ve been waiting for Cyn to come out before you read the rest of the books, this is the time to do it, but wait until you read them before you go on with this. If you get spoiled after this, well, I warned you.

So, when we left our intrepid trio, Willow was gone and we learned more about where the beasters came from. The original beasters got dwarf, fae, or gargoyle DNA mixed into their system. The Maelstrom beasters, like Cyn, come from trolls and demons. Can you guess what kind of DNA that Cyn got? If you guessed demon, you get a flaming ovation. It’s like a standing ovation, but with flaming hands instead. Cyn, Rutger, Vargr, and their remaining beaster party decide that they need to go talk to the War tribe, because well, their name speaks for itself, doesn’t it? This is when we start to find out exactly how awesome Big Daddy is, and it really is.

Meanwhile, we have the Ghoul Lord Avidex who is up to no good at all, and who is doing nasty things. He’s also plotting and planning, and making interesting decisions. And maybe, just maybe, some things that he didn’t see happening may happen. It’s just one of those things that we have to watch and see.

So, Cyn has always been a fascinating and badass character. I mean, look at some of the things that she’s done in the last two books. She’s just gone out and fought and killed as necessary. There’s also the fact that she really doesn’t know much about herself before waking up and being the only person to come back from the GL. I, personally, have theories about who she was before she was changed with the nanites, but Cari didn’t ask me. I think that her explanation of Cyn’s history works, it’s just not my personal theory, but it’s her world, so it’s her canon, so…

Anyway, yeah, Cyn has been badass and fascinating, but I have to admit there were times that she was a little scary in this one. I’m pretty sure that I’m not the only one who thinks that too. I know that Vargr does at times. I’m not sure about Rutger though. He keeps his counsel a little more and I’ve always had a harder time reading him and his feelings.

The thing about Cyn being a bit scary in this one is that she doesn’t even mean to be. She has reasons to do what she did, and they are very logical reasons. They make sense in the context of what happens. That doesn’t make her any less scary. Not in the least.

And before I go, I want to give a huge shout out to Little Mo. He’s the Samwise Gamgee of this world, and the series would be lesser without his character in it.

Oh, Little Mo, how I love you.

OK, that’s all I have to say about this one. Go check it out! Happy reading!

Nicolina Martin-Capo

Capo is the 6th book in Nicolina’s Russo Saga books, and I have to tell you, I think that it is the darkest one yet. It is the story of Luciano Salvatore, who is the aforementioned capo, or head of the mafia family.

So, here’s our story. We start out with Chloe. She’s in Chicago where she has left her friend Kerry with her cousin, helping to hide Kerry from Christian, who was supposed to kill her. (Redemption and Absolution)

Fast forward 18 months, Christian has seriously gone off the rails, trying to find Kerry, and is drunk and crazy. During his crazy time, he decides that Chloe knows where she is, so he’s going to get Chloe to tell him. He beats her, mercilessly. He leaves her with a brain bleed, broken arm, broken ribs, and all manners of bruises, bumps, welts, and terrible things.

Then we have Luciano, who wants everyone to think that he’s happy, who kind of maybe thinks he’s happy, but he’s really not. He’s kind of just empty. He’s a monster, he knows he’s a monster, and he’s going to be a monster until he dies. He’s going to take women, hurt them while he fucks them, kill his enemies, and rule with an iron fist. Then, Chloe shows up. She lied to get into his house, saying that she knew where Kerry was, because she really wants to tell Luciano Salvatore off. She wants to point out what his fucknut nephew did to her, how he ruined her life, how he ruined Kerry’s life, and how it’s all Salvatore’s fault. Only, Luciano isn’t going to put up with that. Nor is he one to let an opportunity pass him by. He was just thinking that the prostitutes he’s been using don’t have any fight or spirit about them, and he wants to have a girl who will fight him but that he can train to be exactly who and what he wants. So, when already broken Chloe walks in, his cock gets hard and then he gets an idea. An awful idea. A wonderful, awful idea. He’s going to keep Chloe and break her so that she will be his little fuck doll.

He has one of his men throw her into a padded room under his bedroom, naked, unfed, soaking wet, hurting, with a damaged cast, and chained. Salvatore is going to break her, by leaving her there and basically brainwashing her.

This book does take place over a long stretch of time, and there is some overlap with Christian and Kerry’s story, but you don’t have to have read those books to read this one. It does fill up some holes though, because you are seeing things from a different POV.

I didn’t like Luci before we went into this book. I mean, really just kinda hated him a lot. And this book really didn’t help the case. I really fucking hated him during huge swaths of this book. You might think that this is a redemption book, but it’s really not. Luci doesn’t really want redeemed. He gets better, somewhat, but not redeemed, at least not in my opinion. He does go through a lot in this book, and there is a lot of upheaval in his personal life, family, and business. Those upheavals really throw him off balance, which you wouldn’t think would happen, considering who he is, but there you go. I don’t love him, but I don’t think I hate him at the end of the book. I don’t trust him so far as I can spit, but I don’t hate him.

Chloe is just fascinating. I love her defiance and her spirit. She’s strong, stubborn, loyal, and smart. I think that she’s also more than just a little devious. She may also be a little impulsive, and if she had been a little less impulsive, she might not have ended up where she was. I think that she is very good for Luci. I’m not going to say that she’s his conscience, because I think that it’s impossible for him to actually ever have a conscience, but she is something for and to him.

I’m kinda hoping that this isn’t the last book, because we get to know Angela a little more, and I would like to see her story. I would also like to see more of what happens with Luci and Chloe.

switzerland-4180466_1920

My favorite part of the entire book is when Chloe curses Salvatore, because, frankly, I think that her curse works.

OK, that’s all I have to say about this one. Go check it out! Happy reading.

Ava Sinclair-Sins of the Father

When it comes to titles, Ava plays games. You look at a title like Sins of the Father, and it could mean one thing if you look at it from one way and it can look like something completely different if you look at it another way. I really like that a lot.

Father Dominic is just about to take over his new parish from Father Morris, who is retiring. He’s been there for a year to learn about the parish and to get some mentoring from Fr. Morris, but it’s his turn now. Part of all the stuff he has to deal with is that the church secretary will be leaving too, which means that he has to find a new one. As a favor to Father Morris, Father Dominic goes to dinner at one of the deacon’s house to meet his daughter to hire her to be the church secretary.

Carmen went to college and got a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She really wanted to stay away from her father, but jobs for people who just have a BS are few and far between. So, back to her father’s house she has to go, sadly. Her father is a jackass and tells her that she needs to work as the church’s new secretary. She tries to get the father to say he won’t hire her, but there’s just something about her, and he does hire her.

I felt so sorry for Carmen. I mean, when I say her father is a jackass, I may actually be insulting jackasses. He’s just a nasty piece of work and probably deserves to be firmly kicked in the balls. A fucking lot. I volunteer to do it. Let me borrow the kid’s steel toed boots, and I’ll be right on it. If I burst one of his testicles, so be it. Anyway, I digress. Carmen just really hurts, and I just really want to just give her a hug and a cuddle and tell her that things will get better. She just needs to have someone do that for her.

Father Dominic is a really good man. His goal in life is to take care of his flock. He just wants to be a good priest to everyone under his care, to make sure that people are safe and have everything they need. There’s just something about Carmen that draws him to her and really makes him want to make sure that she’s safe and cared for. He just wants to wrap her up in bubble wrap and a blanket.

This is a quick read, but it works as a complete story. I don’t feel like anything is missing to it or that anything was rushed through it. It is nicely wrapped up and you get a great story.

collar

I really, really, really hate Carmen’s father. He brings up bad feelings, and I want him to burn in hell.

OK, that’s all for today. Go check it out! Happy reading!

Addison Cain-Strangeways

So, Addison is back with a sorta new novella. This is one that showed up in another anthology last year or maybe the year before. But it has been extended and tweaked up a bit, and well, the tentacle dick is always worth a reread. I have a lot of things to say about Strangeways, so buckle yourself in and see what I have to say, shall we?

Over the generations, male birth numbers have gone done, and what males are born are generally dead by 40. It’s considered the duty of every guy out there to get out and spread his seed far and wide, and women are supposed to be all happy and shit, yeah, whatever dude. Emily has worked really hard over the years to not end up as one of the women who is going to be left as a single mom. She has a brother who is nearing 40 who is married and has kids and who Emily is trying to help support. Pretty much everything she makes that doesn’t go to feed or house her goes to her brother and his family.

She is a waitress at a nice restaurant, and one day, Phi shows up. As she leaves, he’s there, and she ends up taking him home, and fucks him silly, even though he’s an alien. And it’s pretty awesome, because he has the magical cock that does all kinds of cool things. It changes shape, it moves around, and there are yummy tentacles at the base. No knots, but tentacles that tickle all the good places has to be great. Anyway, Phi pays lots of attention to Emily, and all things are good.

This story, when I first read it, seemed very un-Addison like. It’s pretty sweet, has a very nice happy ending, and all sorts of good things happen.

But…

Then I reread it. If you want to read my new opinion, you will have to read under the picture, because that’s where they are all going to be.

I really do like this story and I do like it from both of the POVs I have on it, and which one I have can change from day to day, so that will give me a lot of rereading fun.

italy-1587287_1920

So, here’s how I’ve changed my mind. If you look at the story, there’s a pretty deep level of dark going on, I think. I mean, Phi and his species are all doing this mind control thing, and the majority of the women that they are mating have been basically brainwashed into it. Plus, the aliens have used their powers to make the whole world feel very well disposed to them instead of afraid, like they might otherwise have been.

That makes me wonder if the guys are actually in love with the women that they are mating or if they have just picked a woman who they like and then brainwashed her into liking him so he can fuck her. And the women, of course, think that they are all head over heels, because of this whole urge thing, but do they ever develop real feelings about the aliens they have mated too?

And Emily, being who she is, does she decide that she’s going to just love him because it’s easier than fighting against him, does she actually catch the feelz, or is it a whole Stockholm kind of thing?

Like I said, I reread it and my perspective changed on it. I’ll have to go back and reread the original and see if I can pick up those things in the first one or if it is just in the extended version.

OK, that’s all I have to say about this one. Go check it out at your favorite bookseller. Happy reading!
