Sara Fields-Frantic

Today we have another Omegaverse, by Sara Fields this time. But, before I talk about Frantic, I want to clarify something that I said in Friday’s blog, because I got a question about it. If you want to skip the clarification, go for it, and go to the section marked with ***.

I’ve taken to calling myself an Omegaverse junkie. I’ve read all of the MF on Amazon, I think. There may be a couple of books that just came out that I haven’t gotten to yet. I’ve read a good chunk of the MM there, as well as reading more on AO3, especially since I’ve found out that I can download the stories I like and send them to my Kindle. So, here’s the section that got the question. “This one happens to be MF O-verse, which means that there is some dubon/noncon in there, and it is dark. You don’t see that as much when it comes to MM Omegaverse, which I still find to be a really interesting thing. It’s not bad, it’s not good, it’s just different, and different makes the world go ’round.” And here’s the question that I got. “- Is the MF a mistake or oddity? I don’t understand why it’s so different from MM Omegaverse.”

Short answer is that MM tends to be lighter and more consensual from the very beginning. Not in all of them, there are always going to be outliers. But, they tend to be more traditionally “romantic”. So, when you are comparing them to the MF, which tend to be darker, more dub/noncon, you notice a real difference. Probably the difference between the two mostly leads back to Addison Cain, who is a dub/noncon, dark romance author, and thus writes what she likes. Again, I’ll emphasize that Addison didn’t create Omegaverse, and there were probably MF stories before she wrote them, but none for sale on Amazon. The authors who are now writing MF followed in Addison’s footsteps and write them in the same way. For some good examples of MM, non-shifter, mpreg Omegaverse, that will let you see the differences between the two of them, check out Piper Scott’s His Command series or her Single Dad’s Support Group series. The SDSG is a spinoff of the His Command books. I have read all her books, and she writes both shifter and non-shifter. I hope that clarifies it some. If not, send me questions, and I’ll continue to answer them to the best of my ability and within my opinions.

Frantic is the second book in her Omegaverse RH series. It is a sequel, but not a serial. Having read the first book will help you to understand what Triss is in trouble for, but you don’t have to have read it to get this story. There’s enough explanation in this one for you to get the basic idea as to what happened.

We open with Triss entering her first estrous. She’s been staked outside the city, away from the suppressants so that it will happen. So, she’s just desperate to be fucked. She’s begging the Betas who are in charge of her punishment to please fuck her. The people of the city are standing on the walls watching her, laughing at her begging and being punished. Then, all of a sudden, 3 Alphas appear from out of the wilds and decide that they are going to fight over her. Triss, in all her desperate horny horniness, sidetracks them by begging them all to fuck her. That’s how she meets her Alphas, Garret, Lothgar, and Ravick. Two of them are from the wilds, one is from the city. They fuck her stupid in front of the city, and then they are all knocked out.

I didn’t particularly care for Triss in the last book, but I didn’t hate or seriously dislike her. She had her place in the last book and her role to play. She had her motivations, which were pretty much as old as time. I think her punishment fit her crime, at least when it comes to being staked out in estrous waiting for an Alpha or three to come fuck her. However, the city, being the city, is never going to see it that way. Frankly, I think that they are definitely the true villain in the series. And I don’t even know that it’s just one particular person in the city, although it looks like there is one person who might want to change that, but the traditions and power structure in the city is definitely set up so that they are the bad guys. The largest dynamic, by number, is Betas, so it makes sense to me as to why they would want to make sure that they stay in charge by making sure that the suppressants continue to work. If people get their natural instincts back, the Alphas are going to take over, so keeping the traditions and power structures in place works. That’s why it works that they treat known Omegas the way that they do. And it’s not very nice. It’s a ghetto, in the original sense of the word. It just reinforces that admitting a dynamic is a bad thing to do, and pretending to be a Beta is always going to be good.

Anyway, I do like Triss in this one. I don’t know that I would call her story so much a redemption storyline as more of a discovery about her and who she is under her actions. Although, there is more than a soupcon of redemption in there too. I like Garret, Ravik, and Lothar too. I think that they are going to be interesting in the world in the upcoming books.

Nikki is interesting. I’m looking forward to learning more about her, as well as more about Ellie. I like her a lot.
