Well, K really does know how to help us get through the late winter blues and warm us up with a nice Red Hot Winter. This story originally appeared on the Read Me Romance podcast, where you can hear a new romance novella weekly. But then K added to it and filled it out a little more.
This is one of the Taboo Treats, so we’re back in my favorite town. I mean seriously, Taboo Town is filthy af. There are all kinds of secret affairs and assignations going on, and pretty much everyone is getting it on all the damn time. All of Taboo Treats are interconnected. They can all be read as standalones and you aren’t going to miss anything if you haven’t read any of the others. You will see the same events from more than one point of view because of the interconnectedness. There is no wrong order to read these books in, but K does offer a reading order, if you feel you need one. I personally just read them as they come out, and that works for me.
August was betrayed by his wife and his best friend. Those two ended up together, and may they just rot in Hell. Of course, that means that his daughter Callie is now her best friend Winter’s stepsister. Callie’s mom is all sweet as sugar to her, but makes the wicked stepmother in Cinderella look all warm and fuzzy when it comes to Winter. And the bitch is leading Winter’s dad by his dick, so he always sides with her, which ends up with him kicking Winter out of the house. Callie begs her dad to let Winter stay with him so that she has somewhere to live. August is all for it. He’s going to get his revenge on her father by making her life a living hell. I think that August may have a problem with holding a grudge since the divorce happened a couple of years ago.
I love Winter. She’s all sass and fire. She knows what she wants in her life and she’s willing to work really hard to get there. However, that doesn’t mean that she isn’t hurting too. For as sassy and firey as she is, she’s also got a gushy, marshmellowy center that is vulnerable. It’s a lot easier to have that attitude and anger and sass than it is to show that you might be hurting or that you actually do care what other people think of you or that you are vulnerable.
August can be a huge dick. I’m pretty sure he has a huge dick too, but that’s a different discussion altogether. I think that he was pretty happy to hold his anger close to his heart and cuddle it and let it fester. I’m not saying that he doesn’t have a perfect right to be bitter. I mean, after all, his best friend and his wife were fucking and then got married. I’d be pretty damn bitter, but I think he was happy to be bitter. Again, it’s easy to fall into that bitter place. Bitterness and anger are really easy emotions. It takes work to get past those things.
I’m looking forward to the next story, which I hope is going to be Lauren, who we see a lot of in this story. I know that her story is going to be as good as all the rest of her books.
