EXCERPT:

“I love belts.” He winked, and she trembled all the harder when he knelt down behind her. The cuffs clinked together as he selected which end to use first. “Implements of correction that one can wear, always at the ready.”

“What exactly do you think I should be corrected for?” He pretended to think about it. “How about all the times you drove me to absolute distraction?”

She was so astonished by that lack of reasoning, she almost didn’t notice he had fastened the first cuff around her unresisting ankle, and then buckled that around the right table leg. “I drove you? You’re the one who won’t stop walking around the ship naked!”

“Yes, but who ignores it? Do you have any idea how cold this ship is when you’re wet? Your first dozen strokes ought to be for shrinkage alone. And all those times you called me ‘asshat’?” He shifted to her other side, opening the cuff to buckle down her left ankle. “Granted, I didn’t know what that meant until now, but still…” He circled to the head of the table and leaned down beside her. Hands clasped, weight braced on his elbows, he shook his head. “Poor innocent, little human. Don’t worry. I am going to make this such an education for you.” Ruffling her hair, he stood again.

“You idiot!” she huffed, whipping her hair back out of her eyes. “It’s a curse, not a suggestion. And like hell I’m going to stand here and be taught anything by the likes of y-ah!” She lurched in her bonds, every inch of her straining to escape the lash of pure fire that wrapped her ass, hugging it in the grip of all that supple leather before letting go.

“Is it?” Kogan asked, shifting that deceptively soft strap to his other hand. “Is it really?”

The sting was incredible and yet, when he let his free hand wander a brushing caress across the welt he’d just created, her eyes damn near closed in erotic delight.

BLURB:

She was a salvage operator, patrolling the depths of deep space.

He was a professional consort to royalty, built like a Neanderthal. Twice her width and twice her weight, his six-pack abs had six-pack abs. She knew, because she’d seen them.

It really was kind of too bad they didn’t get along.

Maren Smith-Her Consort

Her Consort is a super short story from the gifted mind of Maren Smith. This story originally appeared in an anthology, so if you read that anthology, you might recognize Piper and Kogan, but revisiting them is perfectly awesome.

Piper is a human salvage operator. She keeps the spaceways clear and open and makes a little bit of money on the side. One day, one of her pieces of space flotsam was a pod with Kogan Pulgoy Vovlov the Third, envoy of his home world Hogluopraeswyria, Consort-in-waiting to Her Royal Ambassador, Agi Oof’Thal, currently assigned to Earth. Only, when Piper picked him up, he wasn’t headed to Earth, he was headed away from Earth. Now, she’s been stuck with him for 2 very long years. They have spent those 2 years on a small ship picking and poking at each other, and doing everything they can do to annoy the living fuck out of each other.

When they run into a ship that needs to be salvaged, it turns into a huge thing in between the two of them. And since they have spent 2 years annoying each other, they really know to keep doing it.

This really is a quickie to read. There is a lot of tension in between Kogan and Piper, and considering there are only 2 characters, the book needs to have that tension. Maren really did well to maintain all that tension between the two of them, no matter what’s happening. There are a lot of levels going on in this story when it comes to the tension between Kogan and Piper. There is also a lot of humor, especially when Piper keeps calling Kogan an asshat, and halfway through, Kogan tells Piper that he realized that it meant that she wanted to wear his genitals on her face. It was fucking hilarious.

I love Maren’s books, and this was no different. It was a lot of fun to read, and I really liked Kogan and Piper.

dead vines on wall

Cari Silverwood-Ruled

I have a sneaking suspicion that Cari Silverwood is a size queen. Ruled is just another piece of proof towards that suspicion. You’ll see why I think that, especially if you read it, but let’s just say that this, Drake could put a horse to shame.

Calliope has just left her brothers’ funeral. She went from being princess to soon to be installed as the monarch in waiting. It was never supposed to be her. It’s not anything that she’s ever even wanted. She didn’t receive any training in ruling. Her brothers were older, and they were supposed to be next, but when the satellites that keep their world quarantined killed her brothers, she ends up with no choice. And an evil general paints her even further into the corner because he comes in and gives her an ultimatum. She will sign everything over to him and let him rule. Or else. She has 24 hours to decide, and oh, by the way, she should go to her room now and stay there. Well, Calli isn’t all that compliant, and she remembers that her father always told her to go to a mauleon named Drake.

The mauleons are another sentient species that is trapped on this planet with the humans. Humans tend to look down on them, because you know how it is. Drake is basically the big crime lord for the mauleons and has had his hands in just about everything, including spying for the old King. So when Calliope shows up asking for help, he knows exactly what he should do. Which, you know, starts with stripping her naked and starting to have his wicked way with her. He also has plans and papers for Calli to sign. His aren’t as bad as the General’s, but they are life altering.

This is a very Cari kind of story. And I’m saying that in a good way. It’s like some of her lighter scifi stories that she’s been writing lately, with that same touch of hot sex, some humor, and some darkness. It doesn’t have as much humor as some of the other books like Prey or Blade, no talking sword for one thing, but there is still more than what would be in the Mesmer or Machinery of Desire books. There are some really intense scenes and all the conspiracies that you could possibly wish for, so yay for that. I love those things.

I like Calliope, both as Princess Calliope and as Calli. I think I prefer her best as Calli, which she’s much more down to earth, not like she is ever all hoity-toity royal, but it’s Calli who wanders the city and goes to stare at the babies and plays with the kids. I think that she is smart, kind, and will do well ruling her people, especially with Drake at her side.

Drake is smart and canny. He knows more than anyone knows that he knows. And he’s only going to let out so much knowledge at a time. I have to wonder what Drake knows at any given time. I like him. I wouldn’t trust him, unless I were Calli, not all the way. It’s hard to trust someone who may or may not know all your secrets, right down to what kind of personal hygiene products you like.

ruled

OMG, the scene with the mauleons’ ruling council is just so hot! I mean, damn.

And Sassi the robot? Maybe not quite as good as a talking sword, but still pretty awesome as humorous relief.

OK, that’s all for this one. Go check it out! Make sure to go review it when you are done. Happy reading!

Jennifer Bene-Inheritance

After a long wait, we finally have the next book in Jennifer’s Fragile Ties book, Inheritance. The first book in the series is Destruction. (my review here) And Jennifer, since I know that you are going to be reading this, I’m not complaining about the wait. It was worth every single second because OMG, it was good. As I was reading this dark romance, I was thinking that we need to have a new category of dark romance. It needs to be Jennifer Bene dark. I’m not trying to slight any other dark romance authors, since we all know that’s totally my jam, but Jennifer has her own particular je ne sais quoi. I really can’t describe it, but there is something that is very uniquely hers and it’s one of those things that lets you know it her book even if you didn’t see her name on the book.

Before we even get started talking about the book, there’s one little bit of business we have to take care of. We have to congratulate Miss Jennifer because she is now a full-time author! So everyone say congrats!

Anyway, on to David and Lianna. They are now several months out from the end of Destruction and the nightmare that came out of that. Lianna is now under investigation from the FBI, all her assets are frozen, and she’s about to have to move out of her beloved apartment, which was the one thing she did on her own, that her father didn’t touch. It has a view that she loves. The new place she has to move doesn’t have a view, is smaller, but she can afford it. That doesn’t mean that she’s all that fucking happy about it. She feels like she’s falling apart and she doesn’t know who she is anymore. She’s flailing. But she has David there, who will help her.

Meanwhile, David is doing everything he can to keep her safe, including talking with some bad people to track her father’s family, the Faures. Because her father was who he was, Lianna hasn’t had anything to do with her father’s family, and David wants to keep it that way, because they are some very, very bad people. Like international criminals kind of bad people. David’s dad brought him up to hate the Faures, and so he’s going to hate them. And he makes Lianna promise to stay away from them. But, you know that this is a Jennifer Bene book, so what do you figure the odds of the Faures staying out of this book are?

The sex in this one is seriously dark, hot, twisted, and oh my very fucking god good. Of course, if you read Destruction, you know what David and Lianna are like. If you haven’t read it, then you need to read it, because then you will understand what the word zipper means. But here’s the thing when it comes to David and Lianna and their sex life, it works for them. You might not like to be chased and then have your ass whipped with a belt, or be the one doing the action, but it works for them, and the scene is really hot. But what makes the whole thing hotter and the whole connection between David and Lianna so visceral is that there is so much passion in between the two of them. Jennifer is really good at writing those connections and relationships and giving you something that you can really feel. She’s also really good at ripping you apart and putting you back together again, which is what she does here. I had a hard time catching my breath sometimes, because this was so intense. But it wasn’t the same level intense all the way through. It was nicely balanced so there are those places where you can catch your breath.

Anyway, there’s another book to read in this series, and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next.

inheritance

I just got to wonder what Jean-Luc’s overall plan is. There is something behind everything that he’s done in this book. And damn, does it appear that he did a lot. I think appears to have done is all we have at this point.

OK, that’s all for this one. I can’t recommend Jennifer’s books enough, ever. Her books have done all kinds of things to me over the years. So, go check this one and all of them out. Happy reading!

And because I know Jennifer read all the way down here, I love you!

Nicolina Martin-Heat

Nicolina is back with a new book for us. Heat is the first book in a new series, the Russo Saga. This appears that it’s going to fall into the mafia romance trope, but don’t quote me on that, at least not until there is another book out, and we can see for sure. But, let’s not worry about that while we have Nathan and Sydney to talk about.

Nathan has to do not very nice things. He’s spent his life working for his family, which could also be called Family, and he’s been doing assassinations and other things like that for his family for many, many years. I mean, like starting when he was 12. But it’s gotten to the point that he is almost completely dead inside. Each thing he has to do for his family just takes another little sliver of his soul.

Meanwhile, we have Sydney who is a very dedicated hotel employee. She has dreams, and she is going to do anything she can to make them come true. Right now, her life is in a rut. She goes to work, she goes home. She goes to work, she visits her dad. She goes to work, she goes home. Wash, rinse, and repeat. Except, now it’s time for her to go on vacation. She’s leaving her Miami hotel to visit her mom in NYC and then spend a few days in the Dominican Republic.

After visiting her mom, she goes out to a bar with a friend and the guy he is interested in. While she’s standing there, a man comes up to her and tells her that she can leave her shoes on while he fucks her. She shoots him right the fuck down, which good for her. She really should’ve for that, because it was just way too much. But the next morning, when she’s about to get on her plane, guess who shows up? Yup, it’s Nathan, but he’s not stalking her, he’s actually scheduled on the same flight as her, and their flight turns into something very, very enjoyable.

But of course, it’s not that easy. Because why would it be? That would mean no conflict and no conflict makes for a short book. So, of course, we have conflict. However, most of it isn’t from outside, even though that’s there too.

I like Nate. He has this very good and light core that has been shaved down into almost nothingness. He’s been forced to do all these bad things, and it really is that he was forced. He didn’t have a lot of choice when he had to start working. I think that makes him a very good anti-hero. When it comes to being a dark romance hero, I think that he’s a little outside of what you might think of, but it works well. Nate broke the mold, and I’ll be interested in seeing if Nicolina is going to follow up with that in the next books.

Sydney, well hmmm, I mostly like her, but I didn’t really start to get into her until she’s on her way to the DR. We get to see more of her herness at that point, which I don’t think we had seen a lot of before that point. I think that she is sweet, smart, and determined. Like I said, she had a dream that she wanted to make come true. But, all that being said, I think that she was a bit naive. Some things happened that wouldn’t have happened if she had paid more attention to what was going on.

I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with the next books.

heat

OK, I don’t victim blame, or at least, I try to be very aware and try very hard not to, but when the creepy creeper insists on getting Syd her second drink, she should really have been aware that things could happen. I think that she got really lucky at that point too.

That’s all I have to say about this one today. Go check out everything that Nicolina has written. She writes some amazing stories. Happy reading!

Games of chance, unexpected situations, and hours of sin!
Thirteen bestselling and award-winning authors are turning up the heat in an anthology featuring brand-new show-stopping stories set in Las Vegas. Roll the dice and get ready to feel the heat!

Night Games by T.K. Leigh:
Note to self: Never agree to play an innocent dice game during a blackout in Vegas. I should have known it wouldn’t remain innocent, not in the city of sin.

Night & Day by Bethany Lopez:
One explosive weekend together nearly ruined them. But, there’s no way Simone and Micah can ignore their chemistry when they’re alone in the dark.

Close Encounter by Stephanie St. Klaire:
The day started with a quick screw, a couple of quirky two-bit cons and ended with a diabolical serial killer. What do you do when the lights go out? Run.

Absolutely Mine by Terri E. Laine:
I made a promise to stay away from my best friend’s little sister. But it’s Vegas and that’s one promise I’m probably going to break.

Honeymoon Hideaway by Cary Hart:
What’s worse than being locked in room with a vibrating bed and your sworn enemy? Waking up next to him… naked! Did I mention he’s also my boss? Oops.

The Do-Over by Christi Barth:
The best way to move on after being dumped? A hot fling. An even better way? Revenge sex and the chance to turn the tables on the guy who dumped you…

Just Us by J.H. Croix:
Ellie asks me to promise her one thing. We can’t tell her brother about us. Small problem though. One night will never be enough.

Dirty Thoughts by C.A. Harms:
He was the crush I never thought I’d see again. Yet here we were in Vegas, during a total blackout. I figure why not explore all the possibilities, or more like let him explore me?

Hard Luck by K.A. Ware:
Ellis James is my kryptonite, the only person who could drag me back to Vegas after I promised myself I was done with that life. I’d bleed for her, I’d die for her, but can I save her?

Becoming His by K.I. Lynn:
When I slammed into Hollywood heartthrob Reid Gallagher, I never imagined it would turn into a first date I’d never forget. After all, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…right?

Going Down by Lisa Shelby:
She’s the only person I’ve ever loved and I’m the last person she wants to see. She’d hoped to avoid me as much as possible in Vegas, but when we get stuck alone in an elevator, not even she can deny that our chemistry still runs hot.

Blind Faith by Lauren Runow:
I never expected to be locked out of my room basically naked in a total blackout. Thinking that would be the biggest shock of my night was my first mistake.

Tracy St. John-Kalquor

So, lately I’ve been working my way through Tracy St. John’s Kalquor universe. It started out as one series, but now has spun off with two more solid series, and then some shorts. I am really enjoying these books, and I keep going back and forth in between the two main series, The Clans of Kalquor, which was first, and Clan Beginnings. There’s also a new series called Clan Companions.

OK, so here’s how the books work. Kalquor is an alien planet (obviously) where women are slowly dying out. There was a virus that went through and killed off a lot of women back in the day, and what Kalquoran women are left are often infertile. To help make the most of the remaining women, and to, you know, give the guys some relief, they form family groups, or clans. Kalquor men break down into 3 distinct breeds, Dramok, Nobek, and Imdiko. Dramok are the leaders, Nobek are the warrior/protectors, and Imdikos are the caregivers. Each clan has one man from each breed in them. And they get together the same way that any relationship would. The guys meet, court, fall in love, and have awesome sex, often seriously kinky.

When the Clans books start out, the Kalquorans are at one generation or so away from extinction. The best scientists have been working on trying to figure out what to do to make their women fertile again. They’ve also taken to testing out other species to see if they can cross-breed, but so far no one has shown up. Then, voila, Earthers happen.

This Earth is a world-wide theocracy. And not a nice theocracy. We’re talking the nasty, conservative, makes evangelicals look liberal kind. It’s the kind where women don’t do anything that may draw attention to themselves, because they all know that they are just one teeny tiny step away from work camps or even execution. Women who are sexually assaulted are found guilty and punished because they tempted the men into assaulting them and they are now sexually impure. It’s not a nice place for anyone to live, let alone women. The Kalquorans come to them and ask them if they can test to see if they are compatible, because apart from one real difference, they are identical, physically. The one difference? The Kalquoran males have two self-lubricating cocks.

Well, Earth, of course, wants to have nothing to do with the demons who mate in groups, have the wrong number of appendages, and have sex with other males. Plus, you know, Earthers are God’s only creations, so they can’t possibly be related to or compatible with aliens.

Some women manage to leave the planet, but they are still watched very carefully by the government, and they are all told to stay away from the Kalquorans. But one woman didn’t listen. Amelia was talking to one of the clans while they were on another planet, and they tested her and found out that Earther women were compatible. When the Earther government found out, it turned really ugly.

The rest of the series involves clans finding their Mataras, or lifebringers, and the struggles that they go through. That’s all set against the larger story arc. You could, maybe, read them as a standalone, but you would be confused, so you really should read them all in order.

Beginnings is the stories of the various clans that show up in Clans as they get together. You get to see what brought each clan together and what they had to deal with to get there. The books aren’t in order to the way that they show up in Clans, and there aren’t as many of those as there are Clans, at least as of yet. It really is interesting to get to know those guys before they get together with their women. There is a lot of sex, a lot of it kinky, but very awesome.

The Clan Companions series only has one book so far, but it deals with one Kalquoran male who prefers males and an Earther male that is gay. It’s a great book, and is related to the greater series.

I really enjoy reading these books, and I think when I get to the last one, I’ll have to turn around and reread them.

About Eva

A confirmed city-girl, Eva moved to rural Western Massachusetts in 2014. She found herself living in the woods with no job, no friends (unless you count the turkey, deer, and coyote roaming the backyard), and no children underfoot, wondering what on earth she had been thinking. But as it turned out, it was the perfect setting to take all those yarns spinning in her head and weave them into steamy love stories.

A romantic at heart, Eva looks forward to date night all week. The perfect evening includes well-crafted cocktails, a fabulous perfume, Cherry Garcia ice cream, and her husband, of course. If you add good friends, live jazz, and impossible shoes, she will follow you anywhere.

Eva holds a BA from Boston College, and a JD from the Washington College of Law. She spent a career working in domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and civil rights. Aspects of this work often find their way into her books.

When she’s not writing sexy stories, trying to squeeze information out of her tight-lipped sons, or playing with the two cutest dogs you’ve ever seen, Eva’s creating chapters in her own love story.
