K. Webster-El Malo

No one is surprised when I have another K Webster book on here anymore, are they? If you are, you must not have been following me long. I’ve reviewed several of her last releases, and blog gods willing, I’ll review many, many more. This one is a doozy though. When I finished, I just looked at my husband and was like damn, that was good. It was just so satisfying.

Before I get started on reviewing El Malo, I just have to mention the cover. The woman on the cover is super hot, and it’s a great cover. OK, on to the book.

Rosa was born in Texas and adored by her mother. She talked her mother into taking her to her favorite restaurant in Cuidad Juarez, where some bad guys raided at the exact wrong time. Rosa’s mom covered her and ended up bleeding to death on the floor of the kitchen of that restaurant. Rosa was filled with righteous anger and was determined to bring down all mafia and gangsters in Mexico. For the past 4 years, she’s been working undercover for the CIA, working as a maid in Javier Estrada’s house.

Javier is the head of El Malo, a cartel that is running their section of Mexico. Javier is determined to ruin Acapulco, where he lives, so that he can send all the business to his father in Puerto Vallarta. His dad owns a huge chunk of the hotels in that area, so they are going to make serious bank on the deal. Javier is really good at it. He and his boys own the town, and work their way through everything and everyone. Rosa is there to get all the information she can, and then once a week, she goes to her handler and gives him her information.

Javier has only noticed Rosa in the context of her job as the head maid of his house. She’s very good at her job. He knows better than to fuck the staff, but when she comes home one Saturday injured because she was attacked on her way home, all of a sudden, he really sees her. Not just that, he knows that she’s his.

Now, while I was reading this, there was one sentence that popped up that really stuck with me. El es el malo. He is the bad guy. El es El Malo. He is El Malo, as in a member of the organization. There’s just something really powerful about that sentence, either way that it’s written. It just struck me hard and made me think. I mean, we’re supposed to know that Javier is bad, after all, he is a Narco. He tortures and kills people. He’s not necessarily a nice guy. But, is he really the bad guy? After reading the book, I’m pretty sure that I know the answer. Rosa has to keep reminding herself of that, because frankly, Javier makes it really hard to remember sometimes. Other times, it’s not so hard.

Javier is an anti-hero. He’s smooth, handsome, well-spoken, and charming. He’s forceful, passionate, and magnetic. Rosa is a very strong woman. I mean, you would have to be to be in deep cover for 4 years. Four years of having to be someone you aren’t all day every day? That has to be exhausting, and yet she manages to do it. She’s brave, resourceful, and caring. Together, the two of them are explosive. Their love story is so all-consuming, it jumps off the page. I was sucked into it and just couldn’t out of it. But there isn’t just the love story, there’s also a lot of suspense going on too. Really, this was just such a helluva ride. I mean, I just couldn’t put it down when I was reading it. My family had to just deal with it, and my cats got shoved out of the way when they tried blocking my Kindle. Poor Chainsaw and Jaguar. They pouted. I almost felt bad about that, but nahhhh. Javier and Rosa helped me over that. Calling it a roller coaster would be putting mildly.

I never trusted Michael. He was scummy to begin with and just yuck. I mean, the way that he treated Rosa was just shitty and then got worse. Poor Rosa. I felt so sad for her because he was the only person who knew the “real” Rosa. Too bad he was so nasty.

I like Marco Antonio. He doesn’t really trust Rosa in the beginning, but I have a feeling that he only trusts Javier. But, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t take care of Rosa. He knows that she is important to Javier and that he trusts her. They both know that she’s lying about something that she’s keeping secret, but Javier knows that he will get it out of her.

Angel, what a fuck he was. But everyone handled that well. I loved it. Of course, I was really scared when it was happening, but I should’ve trusted Javier more. It was great though.

I loved Javier’s dad. He was super sweet, if you can call an old gangster sweet. But the bits with him and Tania and Emiliano are just awesome.

Alison Mello-Refuse to Lose

We have a new author on the blog today, Alison Mello. I saw her on FB and was like, sure I’ll be happy to read and review your book. Have I told you how much I love my life? Being a blogger/reviewer is cool af. I get a chance to read alllllll the things. I get a chance to share allllll the things with you. It’s a win/win situation for all of us.

So, Refuse to Lose. This is a sweeter and lighter story than I would normally read, which isn’t a bad thing. Even my dark and twisted soul needs some sweetness and light sometimes. It balances me out, and sometimes, when I’ve read a lot of dark all at once, I need to have something lighter. It’s like the pickled ginger that you eat when you are eating sushi. It helps to clear your palate and get you ready to go on. Of course, I’m the person who loves eating pickled ginger right out of the jar. I like it so much that my stepfather got me a jar of pickled ginger one year for Christmas. OK, enough digression. This book is a piece of yummy, yummy pickled ginger. It was good to read and it made me happy.

The story starts out with Stella and her son, DJ. They are living in NYC, and it’s been a couple of years since Stella’s husband was murdered. Stella has decided that she wants to take DJ away from NYC and to some place where he can grow up in the fresh air and sunlight, and she doesn’t have to worry about him walking down the street. So, when DJ comes home after the last day of school, Stella tells him that they are leaving first thing in the morning, here’s a couple of boxes, I’ve already packed your clothes, go pack the most important things you have. She’s done some research and has decided that West Virginia is the place to go. She’s not sure where, but she’s sure they’ll find a good place.

When they get to a nice, small town, she finds a diner where she and DJ can eat, and finds out that they are hiring, so she asks Misty, the boss, for the job. Misty hooks her up and voila, Stella and DJ have somewhere to live.

Six months later, Stella is still going strong at the diner. She’s renting a house from one of their old-timer regulars. DJ is getting ready to start baseball. And Trystan, who calls Stella sugar when he sees her at the diner, is in front of the judge because he was arrested on a DUI. The judge sentences him to community service as a little league baseball coach.

Trystan loves baseball. He was trying for the semi-pros when his National Guard unit was called up to the war. While he was there, his girlfriend Sophia cheated on him. When he came home, he started working with his friends at a construction company. On the night that he got arrested, he was out with his boys, and he was driving his friend Billy home because Billy was drunk as a skunk. Trystan isn’t happy about being sentenced to coaching, but the judge tells him that he thinks it will be a good thing for him and for the boys.

Those poor boys. They really have no real team going on. Their last coach wasn’t all that interested in coaching and everyone was glad when he moved. Trystan knows that he’s going to have to get the boys playing as a team, so he does what he can to build camaraderie. Meanwhile, he and Stella start getting closer.

Anyway, you know how it goes now. You don’t want the risk of spoilers, stop at the picture. You don’t mind spoilers, keep going. Like I said, I enjoyed the book. I did think that there were a couple of small places where it didn’t flow as well as it could’ve, but that’s just my personal opinion. And flow issues are something that happens to every author from time to time, so, in the greater scheme of the book, they didn’t really me overly much. It was a good story, with a lot of sweet moments in it. Trystan is a very good man, and he takes a lot of care of Stella and DJ, as well as all the boys on his team. He does really well stepping up to the plate there. Stella is a strong woman who has had more than any person should deal with, but she doesn’t let it break her and she has not only survived, but she’s also thrived, and has made sure her son has thrived.

OK, I knew that Sophia was a problem, but I didn’t realize that she was a complete nutter. I didn’t like her from the first time we saw her, but I didn’t expect her to go to the extent that she did.

I’m glad that Billy found someone to help him fight. He needed that, and Daisy and Landon could really use having a man around to help them. I liked Billy. He seemed like a really nice guy, so that made me happy.

Emily Tilton-Theirs to Use

Back when I was looking around on Amazon for kinky dark-ish books, I think Emily Tilton’s books were some of the first ones I ran across. I’ve since worked my way through the majority of them, both by buying them and on KU. I can’t ever wait to read the next one, because I’m always in love with her worlds. Her books tend to be set in dystopian worlds of one sort or another. Some of them are scifi and take place on other worlds, some aren’t. Theirs to Use is one of the latter.

In Emily’s books, the heroines tend to be right around 18-22, with little to no sexual experience. They are also generally rather sheltered. Emily tends to emphasize shame in these girls. Shame that they are doing the things that they are doing and the things that their bodies want. Modesty is generally emphasized, especially with the books around the Institute and its particular world. Her heroines walk a real fine line between being ashamed by the degrading things that they are being told to do and the love of the way that the things make them feel. It’s a really interesting dichotomy, and I love how she does it.

Part of the way that Emily uses language fits into that too. Normally, in anything involving sex, you don’t see words like penis, vagina, and anus used a lot. But, in Emily’s books, you do. The clinical language wouldn’t fit in with a lot of other author’s books, but it works really well in Emily’s work. There’s just something so hot about a guy telling his virgin bed girl that he’s now going to put his penis in her vagina because he wants to feel good. It sounds like it shouldn’t work. It sounds like it should be stilted, but it fits right into the whole forced shamed/modesty/degradation thing that Emily has going on.

In the world that this book is set in, the lenders are predatory. When Karen signs her contract for her loan, she doesn’t really pay attention to the small print. If she misses 3 payments, not three payments in a row, just three payments, she will end up in jail, and that’s exactly what happens. The particular jail that Karen ends up in has a wing that special young ladies are put in, the fuck wing. Men can come in and rent the girls for 30 minutes at a time. The girls often get spanked with paddles when they misbehave and when they don’t want to have sex with the guys and even if the guys just want to. It hasn’t happened to Karen yet, but she figures that it will soon enough. So, when two guys walk into her cell, she’s pretty sure that she knows what’s going to happen.

Joe and Pete are there on a mission. They are there on behalf of their employer, Mr. Green. They are supposed to find 3 girls that their boss and his 9 partners can buy as their own personal sex slave. Karen is one of the girls that they chose. When Green and one of his partners, Singleton, show up at the prison, they evaluate the 3 girls, but Karen is the one who they choose.

OK. This book is marked as a reverse harem, and I suppose that it could be marked that way, by a loose definition, since there are 10 guys who own her now. But, a RH generally has a relationship between each of the guys and the woman. That doesn’t particularly happen in this book, where we get a gangbang instead. It may be because of Karen’s actions, but I’m not sure that changed anything that would have happened, really. I’m not going to complain about it, since it’s a nitpicky thing, and I liked the book, so it worked out well. One way or the other, it’s a great story and one that I will definitely reread.

I really hated Green, so I was glad to know that he was going to be out of the picture, at least most of the time. I thought that he was a real dickbag. So, there’s that. I think some of the other guys seemed OK, but we really didn’t get to see enough of them to really know them.

Anyhow, that’s all I have to say about this one. I deeply recommend that you get all of her books. Many of them are on KU. Happy reading!

Aubrey Cara-The Untaming of Kat

I’ve had an Aubrey Cara book here before. It’s all about Bambi and her adventures after being abducted by aliens. Funny as all get out, as well as pretty sexy. The book is part of her Monrok world, which is what introduced me to her books. I loooovvvve the Monrok world. Anyway, while those are great science fiction, that’s not the genre we are looking at right now. Today, we’re looking The Untaming of Kat, which is a cowboy romance with some BDSM tossed in. Yummy, yummy, yummy.

Untaming is a re-release of a book called Taming Kat. Aubrey took it, updated it, brushed it off, polished it up, added in some new stuff, and gave us Untaming. I love the name title. Generally, you get titles in this genre that would be Taming.. So, Untaming in the title is pretty cool.

Kat is a native Bostonian. Since she finished college, she’s been drifting around trying to find the right path for her life. Her mother nitpicks her, her sister nitpicks her. When her friend Del invites her to TX for her wedding, Kat falls in love with it and starts working at Del’s husband’s parents’ ranch. She also has to work at a local bar, but she gets to spend a lot of time, out in the great outdoors, chasing cows and horses. She also gets to spend time doing her art. There is only one little hitch in her get along. His name is Caleb. He’s a former soldier, now come home to work on the same ranch Kat is. That wouldn’t be such a problem, if he hadn’t been a one night stand, 6 months ago, in a whole different state.

When Caleb saw Kat again at the wedding 3 months ago, it was a total surprise. But a happy one. He had been thinking of her ever since she snuck out of his hotel room after their one amazing night. She has worked really hard on ignoring him since they met up again, but she pretty much just lives in his head. When he happens to be in the bar the night something terrible happens, he gets to be back with Kat.

OK, I have to say, I totally get Kat. I spend a lot of time judging myself too, so I understand why Kat does it and why she thinks that she’s not good enough. I totally get the self-sabotage thing that she has going on at times too. I’ve BTDT, got several t-shirts. It can be hard to get past that. Of course, no one has really tried Caleb’s method. I never really get mad at either of our main characters, which is kind of a change for me. I often get mad at one or the other, but neither one of them really do anything for me to be mad about. There is someone I do get mad at, but she’s not even a secondary character. Oh, scratch that, there are 2 other people who I’m mad at too, who would both be secondary characters. One of them I wanted to go in and just smack her.

OK, Candice. She’s the one I really wanted to smack. She knew who the walking douchebag was the whole time and didn’t say anything until the very end. That’s not cool. Not cool at all. In fact, I think that she should have some serious consequences because, really. When you read it, you will understand why I think that. But, I’m pretty sure that she’s going to get something in her own book. I’m going to have to read it and be sure.

And? Aubrey has totally ruined leprechauns for me.

Denali

I still dream of him at night.
The deep rasp of his voice. The sense of quiet command, even as a prisoner. The giant bulge of his muscles when he moved. When he shook and sweat above me, his thick manhood filling me, satisfying me.

Sometimes I swear I feel the gentleness of his touch just before I wake. But then I always hear the nightmare voice. The rough snarl of a lion in pain.
Denali, I’m coming for you.
I bolt upright in bed, gasping. Just a dream. A dream, a dream, a dream, a dream. Another dream.
Not real.
It doesn’t take a psychotherapist to know what the dream means.
I shove back the memories of the lion who marked me, ignoring the familiar twist in the pit of my stomach.
Nash.
Did he ever make it out? Or did he die in there and it’s his ghost who visits me in the night?
Will the guilt over not going back to try to save him ever run dry? Doubtful.
I throw off the covers and pad silently to the kitchen, careful not to make any noise to wake Nolan.
I make coffee and wave through the window at my portly neighbor and landlady, Mrs. Davenfield, who is out early weeding her garden. She’s the reason I ended up settling here.
After I escaped, I stayed off the radar. Took only under the table cash jobs–gardening and migrant farm work. I ended up in Temecula–wine country–working the vineyards during harvest season.
Mrs. Davenfield was willing to take cash and skip the credit check to let me rent the little cottage on her property. She took one look at my swollen belly and decided I must be escaping domestic abuse. I never corrected her, because hell, she seems to love the drama and feeling like she’s my secret-keeper. And I needed her help.
And in a way, I was escaping domestic abuse. Just not the way she imagined it. Not some baby-daddy I had to get away from.
No. Nolan’s father is the only part of my horrifying ordeal worth remembering. I guess that’s why he’s the one who haunts me most.
Because I got away.
And I left him there to rot.
