Renee Rose & Lee Savino-Alpha’s Desire

Oh, how I love these ladies. And I adore the worlds that they create individually. The world that they created together is pretty damn awesome too. I’m always looking forward to reading whatever they have coming next. Today, it’s Alpha’s Desire.

So, Desire takes place in Tucson, like most of the other books in this series. Today, we have Jared, who is muscle for Garrett’s pack. He likes to fight and his wolf is pretty violent. He works as a bouncer at Eclipse, which is pretty perfect for him. He also likes to fuck. He’s taken many human women back in the storeroom and enjoyed some up close and personal time with them. But, he hasn’t done that for a while. That’s because he’s obsessed with one human right now, the lovely Angelina.

Angelina is a ballet student at the university in Tucson. Her parents have pushed and pushed her into dance. At this point, she’s not sure if she likes it because she likes it or because her mother made her like it. Her father thinks that she should become a teacher and not try to do anything else. Angelina feels like she’s getting pushed into her parents’ dreams at the expense of her own. The only thing that makes her happy right now is the gogo dancing she does with two of her friends every Saturday night at Eclipse. Angelina went and talked to Garrett and set it up and she choreographed a few routines for the three of them to do. She’s also crushing on one of the hunky bouncers, Jared. When a drunk harasses her one Saturday night, Jared comes to her rescue. She jumps on his shoulder and dances on her shoulder and gets real up and close to Jared, which makes him nuts. That night ends up being really good and then really bad. The good: Jared takes her back into the storeroom and gets her off. The bad: She hits Jared with her car when he’s on his motorcycle.

Jared takes her two friends home and then goes home with her. When she notices how quickly he’s healing, he knows that he’s going to have a problem. He calls Garrett to find out what to do, and he’s told to make sure Angelina gets her memory wiped, but when it comes down to it, Jared can’t do it. Garrett tells him that he has 2 weeks to either figure out is Angelina is his mate or to have her wiped, and he has to stick like Gorilla Glue to her side. The problem with Angelina maybe being his mate? She’s human, and everyone knows that werewolves can’t mate with humans.

OK, here we go. Unlike the other books that have external enemies, there really isn’t that much external pressure and drama in this one. We do have Agent Dune being introduced, and he’s going to be interesting. We also have Angelina’s parents, but they aren’t really the bad guys. I don’t know that I can really point to anyone in this and say bad guy. Instead, all of that pressure and drama comes from Jared and Angelina. It’s all internal as they are trying to figure out who they are and what they want, and how they can fit together. They both have some serious demons that they are trying to fight, and it’s hard to do that, especially when you are trying to fight for a relationship at the same time.

03ba4c44ff7fb2b09147a778251e1166--ballerina-photography-dance-photography

So, the whole Agent Dune thing. That’s going to be an interesting storyline, I think. I think from Jared’s reaction he’s a shifter of some flavor, but I’m wondering if he was a born shifter and he didn’t know it, like Foxfire and Kylie or if something happened to him and he was turned into a shifter and he’s forgotten it. That’s going to be really interesting to find out.

I love where Jared figured out where to bite Angelina for the mating bite. It shows that he put a lot of thought into the whole situation. He wanted to make sure that she would be fine when it came to her dancing, so I thought that was pretty awesome.

So, that’s all for this one today. Go check it out! Happy reading!

Cari Silverwood-Branded Possession

Cari Silverwood does some amazing world building. If you read any of her series, you are going to find a world that is detailed, intricate, and nuanced. All of these things come together to create worlds that I love to find myself in time and again. Today, we get to visit Aerthe again in Branded Possession, the third book in her Machinery of Desire series. So, background on the Machinery of Desire world.

There are three groups of people who live on Aerthe, the Mekkers, the Scavs, and the Grounders.

The Mekkers are the remnants of invaders from space who attacked Aerthe. Aerthe hates the Mekkers and will chase them off the face of the planet if they stay in any one place for too long. So, they live in ginormous landships and those ships create Swathes. They travel across the face of Aerthe, harvesting and mining as they go. There are several Swathes, including the Royal Swathe, which is the one we’re concerned about today. The Mekkers have lost the knack of creating the technology that they had and what tech they do have is slowly falling apart.

The Scavs are nomads and scavengers. They travel Aerthe, searching through the ruins of ancient cities to find things that they can use. They also raid Grounder villages so that they can take slaves that they may sell to the Mekkers or keep for themselves. There is some trade between the Scavs and Mekkers and the Grounders and Scavs.

The Grounders are the settled people on Aerthe. They have their own villages and try not to bother anyone, doesn’t always work, the Scavs will occasionally raid villages or caravans, but they try. They will trade with Mekkers and Scavs. We really don’t see a lot about Grounders in any of the books.

Humans exist on Aerthe as slaves. They were brought to Aerthe through portals. As they came through the portal, their hair and nails became all polished and shiny, making it impossible to disguise who they are. The Mekkers are right happy to have the humans for a couple of reasons. One is that they are fantastic fucks. The other is that Mekkers need something called Factor H. The best source comes from human blood, so all human slaves (as far as we know), have a collar that has a port that goes down into their bodies so that they can bleed whenever that port is opened. Some people like to take the blood straight from the source, others wait until it’s been processed and the Factor H has been concentrated.

Aerthe is a magical, mystical place. It’s somewhere just south of sentient, but very much north of completely lifeless. It’s very aware and doesn’t like Mekkers because they raided the planet and aren’t natives. But, Aerthe also has its own agenda, and we aren’t all that sure what it’s up to. I’m sure that Cari will clue us in further.

Now that we’ve gotten all the way through that background, let’s get into Branded. Gio is a human. She’s the one who has been opening portals that have been bringing the humans to Aerthe. She’s been trying to reverse engineer the process so that she can send the humans home. On her first try, Gio lost the tips of some of her fingers. But, she persevered and was able to send Sawyer and his Grounder lover back to Earth. She also managed to kill Drette, who was her owner during the Scav attack in the last book. Gio wasn’t able to get away and was taken prisoner and was tortured and then sent to a blood snack room to die. In those rooms, Mekkers go crazy and drain the slaves while fucking them. Gio has tied a tourniquet around her arm to keep the drug that the Mekkers injected her with away from the rest of her system because she sees that it turns the women into very horny, very mindless slaves. Just before she’s going to get taken, in bursts a man in a coat and hood. The mystery man shoots everyone there, cuts off the tourniquet and takes Gio away.

Ryke is the King’s Own Lawgiver. He’s a phantom. There aren’t a whole lot of people who are sure that he exists, and they are mostly the people who have been his “clients” or the people in charge of him. Ryke is only answerable to the King, but he gets the King’s orders through the King’s advisor, Gyle. Ryke is the person who gets the answers from the people who don’t want to give them. He does all kinds of things to get those answers, including using sex. He really, really likes breaking women. He doesn’t generally fuck them, but he uses his fuckspears, which yeah, are exactly what they sound like. So, when his newest client is Gio, and the goal is to find out the secret of making portals, he’s got all kinds of dark, dirty, obscene, filthy, and darkly delightful things to do to her body. And he’s going to start with medicine that will drive her out of her mind with desire and a large fuckspear.

OK, it’s that time. Cari’s world is a slaveworld, which means there’s a lot of noncon/dubcon and discipline going on. And because it’s Cari, there are some really imaginative sex scenes. Really imaginative. They are also very intense. If you are a fan of the lighter side of things, then this is probably not the best book for you. Not only are we getting all that lovely sex going on, we’re also learning a lot more about the Mekkers and Aerthe. We get to learn more about Aerthe’s agenda, but not a whole lot, just enough to figure out that there is one. When it comes to the Mekkers, we get a good look at their society, which isn’t anything we’ve seen in the other books. Mekkers are divided into those who are Above Deck and those who are Underdeckers, which is where Ryke comes from. Ryke has a brother named Badh. Now, if you’ve ever looked at my Goodreads, you’ll notice that Badh is my user name there, and it’s the name on an account I keep for when I end up in FB jail. Cari decided that she needed to use it. I think I made her mad at one point. Well, not really mad, I hope. And so, Ryke’s brother got his name. I’m so glad I could help Cari. This book also had a lot of changes going on, changes which are going to affect all the people on Aerthe and can really upset the status quo. It’s going to be really interesting to see in the next book, Exquisite Possession, which will also be the last book.

I know that I’ve had a whole lot to say about this one and that it’s a lot longer than many of my other reviews, but trust me, I’ve barely touched on the book or even the world.

bU6Ff

The whole religious aspect around Ryke is fascinating. I really enjoyed reading about that. You don’t often get to read books with the beginnings of a religion going on, so that’s fascinating to watch.

It’s also really interesting to watch Ryke’s evolution in general and how it comes to Gio. Gio has her own evolution, but I don’t think her changes are quite as drastic as Ryke’s are. And I don’t know that Ryke’s are an evolution as much as they are a de-evolution, bringing him back to where he was before he went Above. But, there’s the fact that he embraces things that he never really did before, so maybe it’s a combo of both.

I can’t wait to see the next book. I have questions and I need them answered and I know that it isn’t going to happen until the next one comes out. I just hope it’s soon. Of course, it’s not going to happen until after we get monster cock story from Cari, but since I’m excited to read that story, I’ll be happy(ish) to wait.

So, go check out all these stories, you won’t be sorry. If you haven’t read them, I highly recommend a binge read. Happy reading!

Too human.

Katie Douglas-Protected by the Scotsman

Great Britain lost a good many things in WWI. One thing they lost was most of a generation of young men. Trench warfare was brutal, and WWI was just nasty. Meanwhile, back in Old Blighty, there was a generation of women who were more educated than ever before and who took over running the country while all the men were at war. They were working in factories and land girls went out to the farms to make sure that the food was handled. Then the Armistice came and only some of those men came home. WWI created a whole lost generation of young women who didn’t have men to marry. If marry they wanted. So, what does all that history have to do with today’s book by Katie Douglas? Well, it takes place in the mid-1920s, and it stars a stubborn English young lady and an even more stubborn Scottish man. (As a side note, Sean, our hero, remembers being in the trenches on the Western Front for the Christmas truce. If you don’t know the story, hit the link and visit Wikipedia. The Christmas truce is the reason I can never make it through singing Silent Night without tearing up.)

So, enough with history, let’s get into spanko fiction with Protected by the Scotsman. Bobbie is a scholar. She wants to get out into the ruins of the world and explore. She wants to find the next great discovery. She doesn’t want to put it in the British Museum, since she doesn’t like it, but she wants to prove that her research was right. The problem is, in the 1920s, as a woman, she’s still at a disadvantage. People just want to pat her on her head and say isn’t that just so cute. But, she’s got a very sharp mind in her head, and she wants to use it. So, she spends time researching and then goes out and about. In 1924, she’s on her way through Egypt. She’s got a theory about a great discovery that she wants to find. She also wants to do it before that thief, William Petrie, finds out about it. He’s forever following her and stealing her work. While she’s on the train, a Scotsman opens up her door and asks her if she’s her.

Sean has been tasked by her parents to track her down and bring her home. They know that she’s off and gallivanting, and they want her under their thumb, trying to make a good match. That’s not what Bobbie wants. When Sean tells her that he’s taking her home, she refuses. Then he turns her over her knee and spanks her. But, Bobbie isn’t done yet. She’s smart and crafty and manages to get away from him. Too bad she doesn’t escape for good. This pattern goes on, and on, and on, and on.

So, here’s where you get to choose your own adventure. I loved this story. It’s fun, it’s sweet, and it’s sexy. There are easter eggs and funny bits all through it. I had to read parts of it to my husband and he just rolled his eyes at me. But, you do have to watch out for snakes. Trust me on this. You’ll see why. The only thing I really wanted out of that whole bit is for someone to say “Snakes, why did it have to be snakes?” It’s a great story, and a very Katie Douglas story. While she does go dark, she also has a way of sticking in humor and lightness, so it’s perfect. I love Bobbie. She’s strong, she’s feisty, and she’s smart. Sean is a good man who stops to think when Bobbie points out several things to her. I really liked him a lot.

ancient-architecture-building-965208

Poor Sean. Bobbie just ran him ragged. Egypt, Norway, Turkey, Siam, the Shetlands, wherever she went, he went. Most of the time he was chasing her down and spanking her, but not always. But, I think they both liked it, mostly.

So, that’s all I have to say about this one. If you are in the mood for a lighthearted romance along with some spanking, Katie has your back. Happy reading!

Loki Renard-Taken Boy

So, you remember the last couple of Loki Renard books that I posted, Shamefully Broken and Broken Boy? Well, Taken Boy is another one in that world. It’s related to them, but you really don’t see Ellie or Aiden or any overlapping events, except for at the very beginning.

As a refresher, let’s go over what’s been happening. In SB, Ellie went to Mason, her brother Aiden’s best friend, and asked him to help out Aiden and get him out of trouble. Mason said that he would, as long as she agreed to be his. Well, after calling him a perv, she stomped away, but when Mason saved her life, she ended up going home with him and being his. Mason arranged for Aiden to be safe.

In BB, Aiden is being protected by two of Mason’s guys. They are both Dom-ly types, and Aiden, well, he likes it a lot. He gets protected by his Daddy and his Dom, and the bad guy, Bobby Cornoli can’t get at him.

In TB, we have Bobby’s story. Bobby is 22 and thinks that he’s on top of the world. He thinks that he’s all that and a bag of chips. The biggest problem is that he’s 22 and thinks he’s invulnerable and that he’s a bigger threat that he really is. Mason was really, really, really pissed that Bobby tried to touch Elliot. That was a major goof. And when Mason gets pissed, he gets even. In fact, he gets more than even. When it comes to his girl, he’ll go nuclear. And that’s exactly what he decided to do to Bobby.

Mason arranges for Angelo Vitalli, who really is in the Mob and who really is all that plus the giant bag of chips, to take Bobby. His job is to break Bobby, by whatever way possible, and leave him with absolutely nothing. When Angelo first sees Bobby, he gets ideas. Wicked, dirty, obscene ideas. Ideas that Bobby is going to find painful. In fact, in the first few minutes that Angelo has Bobby, he canes him but good. You would think that Bobby wouldn’t like that, but…

So, this is a pretty quick read. It’s also pretty filthy. But, filthy in such a good way. Angelo is hardcore. He’s pretty much a hardcore sadist, IMO. He likes to break men, and Bobby is actually perfect for him. Angelo is also very smart, and he puts that to work. This is a nice companion piece to the other books. It’s a standalone, so you don’t have to have read them to know what’s going on in this book. Its action is mostly isolated from the other two books, except for in the beginning.

il_fullxfull.906223548_cr8p

OK, I thought that Bobby was an asshole a good deal of the time, and he thought that he was a whole lot more than he was. I have a 22 year old son, and 22 year old young men are often assholes and think that they are more than they are. At 22, you’re still growing up. Even though Bobby has been working the streets for a while, the fact is that his brain hasn’t quite finished developing, which science says happens around age 25, so he doesn’t always make the best decisions. His whole reasoning behind going after Aiden just shows that.

There is one time when I feel really bad for Bobby. That’s after he makes a move that Angelo knew would happen. That time period made me feel sorry for him. Of course, I think that time was good for him, even if it was hard.

Ok, that’s all I have to say today. It’s only $2.99 right now on and is on KU on the Zon, so go check it out. Happy reading!

Ava Sinclair-Night of the Drakoryans

Ava Sinclair finishes off our Night of… RH grouping. She’s bringing up some more Drakoryans. Since that series is already a reverse harem, it’s not that hard to fit it right into the rest of the group. This one brings us the story of Syrene. We see her a bit in Fire Bride, talking to Lyla, so her book obviously comes before Lyla’s story. Night of the Drakoryans gives us her full story and explains why she is the way that she is in FB. Not that I’m complaining about her, I like Syrene.

So, here’s our story. Syrene lives in one of the tiny villages that is ruled by the Drakoryans, a species of dragon shifters. The Drakoryans burn the fields, limit how much the villagers can grow, and several other things. They also demand a virgin sacrifice every few years.

Syrene’s mother died when she was born. She saw Syrene breathe but three times before she died. Her dad did the best she could, and he married another woman. Syrene’s step-mother is the type that gives evil step-mothers a bad name. I mean, if she had decided to feed Syrene a poisoned apple, it would’ve been nicer. The evil cow has spent years upon years upon years squashing down Syrene as much as she can. She won’t give her clean clothes, she won’t get Syrene a brush to brush her hair, so it ends up looking like a bird’s nest. Since Syrene has raven colored hair, the cow calls it a raven’s nest. Anytime something happens in the village that Syrene’s half-brothers have done, the step-cow makes the villagers believe that Syrene is the one who did it, so no one in the village likes her. Her dad is worse than a limp noodle. He does nothing to protect Syrene at all, even when she’s beaten by her half-brothers. So, when Syrene is chosen for the sacrifice, instead of the normal mournful and somber situation, the village practically throws a party, after all, this worthless, terrible, nasty, horrible young woman is leaving, and their village will be happier. Her step-cow even tells her that with the extra acreage that they are going to get from Syrene being sacrificed is going to go towards getting something useful, a cow.

The only people who have the proper attitude when it comes time for her to leave are the priestesses. They are careful to prepare her and make her look beautiful and try to make her last hours in the village good ones. The only glitch happens when the evil one gets a chance to talk to her. Syrene got to have her say and make the stupid cow cry, so there’s that. As she walks to the Altar Rock, the villagers are like damn, maybe we might’ve done fucked up a little. Syrene though, she just ignores them like the queen that she is, and waits for the dragon. She’s ready for death and has accepted that it is come.

Edrys, Nyron, and Xarsi are the brothers who are the lords of Jo’lyn. It is their time to have a mate, and that mate is Syrene. Edrys is the one who goes to get here, and when she wakes up in his bed, she’s furious at them. She actually attacks him. When the guys don’t understand what’s going on with her, they call for the Oracle, who tells them all about the past and how she was treated. He doesn’t give them all the details, just that she’s been ground down, and hated, and she thinks she’s worthless. He also tells them that if they don’t bond with her immediately, the bloodline of Jo’lyn will die. To give them that chance, instead of each brother having his own night, the Oracle will turn one night into a long night. Their guests will think that it’s only been 1 night, but for Syrene and her boys, it will be 6 days. That will give them the time to figure out how to bond with her.

OK, I’ve looked at this, and realized that I’ve had a lot to say. Of course, this is all stuff that you will get in the first few chapters, so I’m not really spoiling anything. I don’t think, at least. As much as I like Lyla, and I really do, I relate more to Syrene. She’s been so profoundly neglected, abused, and devalued that she barely feels like a person. The long night gives each of the guys their chance to bond with Syrene, and they each go about it differently. And they go about it in a way which will meet a need that Syrene may not even know that she has. But in turn, she makes them better men.

architecture-building-castle-417274

I’ve talked a lot about the story. I think more than I usually do. Mostly that’s because I relate so much to Syrene. She’s a tough, tough woman. She went through so much, but she managed to survive, and now she’s at the point where she can thrive. Having her three mates, each of whom meets something in her and makes that section of her feel better and between the three can make her whole, has given her a place to finally be the amazing person that she is. It’s a great story, and I think it works really well when it comes the rest of the Drakoryan world. The stress in this is all internal, no outside drama or pending war, just a relationship that needs to be formed. That’s something totally different.

I have to say, I love Nyron’s justice. At least, I think it’s Nyron. I’d have to get up and go check my Kindle and I left it in the other room. And his vengeance appears not to be sated any time soon. I’m bloodthirsty enough that I took great joy in that. And so did Syrene.

OK, I’ve gone on and on and one. It’s a relatively quick read, just like the rest of the series, so you should definitely go grab it so that you can read it. Happy reading!

Alta Hensley-Devils & Rye

Alta has some more top shelf booze for us to drink today. Today, we get to have Devils & Rye. This is the 4th book in the series and is just as good as the others. Harley Crow is still my favorite, because well, he’s awesome, but that doesn’t that this isn’t a great story. I enjoyed it a lot.

Alec is one of the founding and managing members of Spiked Roses, the premier gentlemen’s club of NOLA. He’s also a man who has run away from his past. There was a sneaky, nasty, gross secret society called the Iron Colt Brotherhood, that he walked away from because of what they did and what they stood for.

Alec’s best friend Rhett has a beautiful daughter named Makayla who is just shy of 21. After spending all her life locked up under her father’s thumb, he finally let her go to NOLA so that she could work at Spiked Roses. That would let Alec watch out for her. On Makayla’s very first day of work and what she thinks might be her new, normal life, Alec gets a letter from her father, begging him to take her away and hide her at their place, a house on the lake. She’s in danger, and Alec would know why. Rhett also sent a letter for him to give to Makayla so that she would know that she should do what Alec tells her to do. Of course, when Alec goes to give the letter to Makayla, she’s naked to the waist, with Tennessee trying to zip her into a red lace dress. That stops Alec in his tracks and makes him realize that little Makayla isn’t so little anymore.

OK, it’s that time. I’m going to go on and continue to drink this lovely glass of rye, you can choose which way you want to go. There are some very dark things that happen in this book. Not the darkest things I’ve ever read, but they are moving towards that way. I really do like the book, and I’m looking forward to more of the series.

I have two words. Dildo. Bench. You’ll see.

I did kind of want to smack the crap out of Makayla because she went and made a supremely stupid choice right after Alec told her what was going on. I mean, who does that? I get loving your father, but she knew what was going to happen to her. As a parent, I would much prefer to see myself get hurt than to have my child in a position where something bad was definitely going to happen to them.

OK, that’s all I have to say about this. Go check out this one and all of Alta’s work. Happy reading!
